Which would be better to make gain a bit smoother (out of these two - please dont recommend TS9's etc)? Im looking to get either of these to use instead of the gain boost on the VK, which seems to be a bit trebly.

I voted for the Bad Monkey. I own it. When I was looking to purchase it I tried them both out side by side, the SD sounded more brittle and dead.

Did you try it over an already driven channel? Or over a clean channel

Bad Monkey.
The SD1 is alright, but not a good boost, and it's not smooth.

Distortion?

Those are both overdrives.

Im looking to use one of them as a gain boost rather than the built-in gain boost on the VK

Ppft. Quiet you. Those pedals are both overdrives.
And don't recommend him to get new pickups, you have invaders... so...

Again, the Bad Monkey.

I really like my sd-1 as a boost or in conjunction with other dirt pedal. I have done some modifications to it, though.
