so i had a original block letter peavey 5150. i took it to this guy who is gutting the insides of the 5150 and installing an ac30 circuit board but keeping the original transformers so it will still be 120 watts. he is also putting in 4 EL34 tubes and sockets to power it. i'm getting it back in about 3 days and was just wondering what people thought of this insane project. I'll let everyone know how it sounds

hopefully you got the 5150 for pretty cheap too, won't be too expensive in the long run and might have a very unique sound.

It'll definitely sound different to an AC30, darker and less jangly. But it'll be interesting to see how it turns out.

What variety AC30 preamp did you get put in? Top Boost? Normal Channel? Tremolo? Any kind of Master Volume?
The Laney Thread are big and clever. No exceptions.

If he is installing the AC30 board inside of the amp and just leaving the output transformer then the amp will not actually push 120 watts. It will just mean that the amp can put out up to 120 watts. The output transformer is prolly rated for higher than 120 watts anyway. I believe that 4 EL34s can safely push about 100 watts at most so you however be close to 120 watts.

thats good. i would much rather have a 100w head than 120.

There's probably not going to be that much of a difference in volume between a 100 and 120. Both of em are still ridiculously loud when cranked

So whats the status on the amp now?

yeah i mean there isnt really a WHOLE lot difference in 50w and 100w but it gives me a little room with speakers. and still a waiting. it'l be ready tomorrow or friday

The extra wattage really just gives you some extra headroom which is always a good thing. Post pictures too haha, i personally love amp porn.

oh for sure dude. and for now im getting all the name plates taken off. i dont want all the halfbrain metal heads coming up to me like "oh man thats the best m3t@l amp EVURRR" but the guy is hooking me up with someplace in nc that is going to make a custom nameplate for like $50-$70 bucks
