hey

you may of seen a few threads started by me about this topic other the past week hopefully this should be the last one. firstly ive managed to find somewhere that stocks jj electronics tubes and have been told to get 2 6L6 GC valves for the power amp (http://uk.rs-online.com/web/search/searchBrowseAction.html?method=searchProducts&searchTerm=5011336&x=13&y=8) and 3 ECC 83 valves (http://uk.rs-online.com/web/search/searchBrowseAction.html?method=searchProducts&searchTerm=5011364&x=0&y=0)for the preamp, just got a few questions, firstly will these work in my amp (which is a hot rod deluxe if you missed it in the title) even though the preamp tubes are not the same specification as what is currently in the amp? (amp currently has 3 12ax7's and not ecc 83's which is what i was told to get). Secondly, has anyone had any experience with jj electronics valves, if so are they any good? are they better or worse than the grove tubes that come stock in fender amps? (if you know of course).

Thanks any help would be really appreciated

ECC 83 = 12AX7

Same thing... I think.
Correct.

RS look like they're out of stock anyway. Try:

www.banzaieffects.com

Good choice for valves.

The Tung-Sol 5881 is meant to be an EXCELLENT 6L6 type output valve. Smooth, creamy, buttery, warm. You need to buy a matched pair.

Also, JJ preamp tubes are a bit dark. Tung-Sol 12AX7s are a much better more rounded tube IMO.

i found this site called watford valves who say they supply a lot of famous guitarists

i was looking at there valves for 6l6's i was possibly thinking of trying there own brand, which is harma apparently http://www.watfordvalves.com/products.asp?search=6L6&man=&page=1 but if there any other tubes on there that are good and would work in my amp would be cool if you could let me know

also for the 12ax7's/ecc83's i was thinking of going with the jj tubes but again if theres any you think are better please let me know

has anyone used this site before?

I ued watford before. Delivery was much faster than banzai, but they dont quote your vat or delivery price on site. So you pay £20 for some valves and they turn out to be £30

But banzai wouldn't get there for Sat/Sunday.

See if you can get Tung-Sol 12AX7s. If not, EHX are worth a look and after that JJ.

As for power tubes, I've never used harmas so I wouldn't know, but again the Tung-Sols are always good, look into the Tung-Sol 6L6s, maybe also look into the TAD 6L6 types, which are meant to sound pretty cool. JJ 6L6s are always a safe bet too.

i think im gonna go for the harma 6L6's http://www.watfordvalves.com/product_detail.asp?id=272
give them a try as for the 12 ax7s im torn between these 2:

http://www.watfordvalves.com/product_detail.asp?id=1382

http://www.watfordvalves.com/product_detail.asp?id=694

how greatly do different tubes effect the overall sound of the amp btw?
also all these tubes ive picked out should work in my amp shouldnt they?

thanks again for the help so far specially to you mr carrot

Go for the Harmas by all means, my friend put one of their higain preamp tubes in his amp and it was brilliant.

Well, JJ preamps aren't really overly great. They're kinda overly dark and lacking in sparkle. The Tung-Sols are warm and very well balanced, with lovely treble definition and smoothness allround. Tung-Sol ftw here.

It'll be a noticable change, but not a huge change. You'll like your sound more, for sure.

And they'll all work.

ahh crap the order wouldnt be dispatched till friday so no chance they would get here in time, can pre amp tubes be changed individually? cos i think its just one preamp tube thats died so i could go n buy one from somewhere tomorrow which will do me for the gig then order all new tubes from watford valves for afterwards hmmmmmm
