I was talking with my parents about the war and they said ''Thank God in Canada we don't forcibly draft our teens into the army'' etc etc

And i was thinking.. If in the country you're living in right now they had this force Draft where you're FORCED to take on military training and perhaps even forced to go to war itself.

Now me ? I'd try to evade at all costs, evading however would be illegal, and changing country would be difficult since the country wouldn't ACCEPT you as a refugee and instead aknowledge you as a criminal.

So my question is to you, how would you effectively dodge the draft ?

And by the way, dont give me any of that pussy bull****, I don't believe in fighting a war without a cause, I'd only fight under the condition that my country is being attacked DIRECTLY.

Its like what Dave Mustaine said once ''Only fools truly stand and lay down their arms.. no not me.. not when death lasts forever''

In relevance to your topic, I think that there isn't much choice, but if you truly believe that fighting a war is wrong and you are willing to sacrifice any chance of having a good life. Godspeed, you acted on what you believed in, and you didn't kill people in the process.

If conscription was re-instated for 18-21's in the UK i would happily join.

I'd probably run to Canada ... hehe. Though you guys aren't so good about draft dodgers any more, as you noted in your post. I'd rather face prison time than murder another person. So failing fleeing I'd probably be headed to the big sin bin. And if I was somehow drafted I think I'd declare myself a homosexual and get discharged. I guess homophobia in America has some benefits ...

Just enrol yourself in the coast guard instead of the army. You'll probably still be close to home.

actually, I'd do the same thing.

you think it'd be that easy ?

I don't think the border guards would take kindly to one of their own draft dodging
I think I'd simply try hiding in my own country, live with an older friend and make a living for myself and attempt identity fraud

Anyway. Only Child here. All my parents (or at least one of them, to my knowledge) have to do is sign paperwork and I'm not able to be drafted. Wohoo.

Seriously, there are plenty of jokes about the Canadian military, but truth be told, our special ops are a valued asset.

People used to dodge the draft by going to university.
That's why it mainly affected the poor.

Yeah, I reconsidered that and in reality I'd just become gay.

The Coast Guard actually plays a big part in overseas events, such as boarding ships and the such. They usually work in close contact with the Navy, since no one can board a ship legally without a Coast Guard member or affiliate there during the boarding.

But on topic, I'd go. I'm already one year from enlisting anyways.

It'd depend on the war.

If my country is under attack, then sure I guess I'd go. However, if I thought the war was a bunch of BS then I'd get the hell out of there.

You've got a point, but I imagine that the chance of dying in a ship are much lower than dying as a foot soldier if you were stationed near Iraq.

Very true, but the sea does have its own set of risks, not to mention raids while boarding a ship could take place. But yeah, probably still safer.

Might even be safer with the Air Force, working behind a nice computer or arming a plane many hundreds of miles from the fighting.

Yeah basically... If Canada was under DIRECT invasion than of course I'd enroll (especially since the province I live on would be the first to be attacked due to geographic circumstances)

because then enrolling would be a way to protect yourself (a deadman can't shoot back) as well as others

Oh. I didn't know that particular army was in a decently-sized war right now, with not really any end in sight, and the invading country constantly looses soldiers for no purpose.

Thanks for clearing that up.

TD nights is right you know..

The singaporeans aren't doing **** ALL right now and probably won't get involved into anything for quite some while. Im sure alot of them would change their minds about it if the idea was to send their reserves into the battlefield. Im sure for most of them it's just a good workout and education system.

With pay I believe ?

Being payed to get in shape and become smarter and operate tanks/aircraft/other cool military perks WITHOUT actually having to go into battle is...

Not always 100% true, in the case of Canada anyway. We've excepted Americans in the past who fled because they didn't want to fight in Vietnam, or some other bogus "war".

The war has been going on for a while now BECAUSE they didn't have enough soldiers to begin with. *Puts up flame shield* If anything, a draft would actually help matters in resolving the conflict sooner because there would actually be sufficient personnel to get contested cities and districts under control. As Gen. Petraeus and several military officers have said, along with the opinions of many units serving in Iraq, if there had been enough troops to begin with, many more lives wouldn't have been lost. Or did you forget that the army is composed of VOLUNTEERS, doled out piecemeal by a resistant Congress who only permitted minimal troops to take care of rebuilding a country the size of the west coast/Rocky Mountains?

Oh, and it's "loses soldiers for no purpose." LOSES.

Does he not realize that going to war is an excellent way to die?

Anyway, I'd dodge it in a ****ing heartbeat. I can't think of a single situation in which I'd go to war. I don't care about Bin Laden, I don't care about Saddam, I don't care about Kim Jong Il or any other crazy dictator, I don't care about the "communist threat", I don't care about 9/11 or any other attack on our own soil. I am not going. I do not want to kill or be killed. Any desire for vengeance or to "serve my country" ( a phrase which gets thrown around way too much) pales in relation to my determination to avoid situations in which killing is involved. Owe it to my country? **** 'em. There isn't a single entity on earth that a human being can owe their life to, as far as I'm concerned. You can fight because you want to, but you aren't obliged to give your service to anyone, in my opinion. I have my own life. It's mine. All ****ing mine. And I do declare that war will not be a part of it. Hell no, I won't go.

As for how, my friend has family in a tiny coastal village in New Brunswick. I'd probably take a boat and hide out up there until the heat is off.

That's a stupid way to think. What if you considered that your country's cause is unjust? Who are you to state which side's cause is more just than to other's? Also, you seem to think that fighting=living, so the world would be better off with you dead anyway.
