How does he get that thick tone?

He says it's "untreated" but it sounds like it's got a little bit of gain on it.

Any ideas? I've been trying to get a thickish tone, and I just found this video which is close to what I want.

Edit: With my strat!

More Mid and very light overdrive? Your PRS should be plenty thick though...

with the strat you could turn your middle up, possibly the neck pickup...
#7
neck pick up, single coil (no humbuckers!)
turn up the gain until right before it starts to break up... aka not very much gain at all.

make sure you have treble up a decent amount. Mids should probably be boosted, too.

Edit: Just have the treble high enough to give the sound a little "sparkle." Mids need to be boosted, and i like to have the bass down at about 10-11 o'clock (but that could just be my amp).

good luck...

also, about reverb: VERY little, if any!

It's thick because he's got the bass all the way up and it's a really old plexi through at least one 4X12. That combination with a strat neck pickup makes for a very cool, warm clean tone with just a tiny bit of breakup. It's usually even cleaner than that. That will be hard to recreate with the VK clean. Maybe try a tiny (really tiny) bit of reverb?

I was afraid of that.

I got close to a fender clean with the bright switch, volume 3, bass 8, mid 10, treble 5 or 4.

The clean is pretty weak on the VK though. Just trying to get close.

Going from my strat into my peavey classic, I have my bass at about 10, mids at about 5, and treble about 6 (it's a middy amp, so I dial down on the mids a bit), with my tone pot rolled all the way up and the neck pickup selected. I also have it on the lead channel giving very minimal preamp gain. I get a nice, rich, thick cleanish tone. It's real nice.
