Got the dread UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME screen today and tried a few different things, now im stuck!

Ill give you a basic outline of what happened. I installed some new software yesterday (legit too!) and turned off my computer only to turn it on today to find this messege UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME and a wacking great blue screen. So iv tried starting windows in the various different modes........no joy. Iv tried sticking the XP disk in and pressing R BUT nothing happened. I need this computer to work because stupidly, i know i know, nothing is backed up. Im an idiot! So i need some help drastically!

cheers

go to the bios pressing f2 or delete then find the master boot device and change it to HDD, if taht doesnt work change it to CD-rom drive and insert the XP disk and go onto recoveer mode

Boot from the XP disk, hit r to repair a windows install, get to a DOS prompt, and edit your Boot.ini file. It should be on the root of C:\

Or just take the error code the blue screen gives you (typically some stop error like 0x00000000a or some shit) and put that in the search bar at

Don't do any of the above - I'm not saying they won't work, there's an easier way though.

Just run chkdsk /f in the windows recovery console, and it'll sort it out.

I work in a lil' LAN center nearby, and we get tons of repairs in because of that error, and it's surprising how much shops can charge for fixing easy things like this - simply because they can get away with it.

Do what Climate says. Otherwise, this is something I posted on a similar thread from earlier today...

1) Insert Windows CD.
2) Boot from Windows CD
3) When the option is available, go to "Recovery Console" (Normally you have to press "R")
4) Select the partition you want to work on (ususally 1)
5) Enter admin password (I don't thing it will display anything when you type)

You should now be logged on to the Recovery Console.

6) Type in fixmbr and press Enter. Let it do whatever it will do. This should fix your problem
7) Type in fixboot and press Enter. this may also help, and it can't hurt.
8) Type exit and press Enter.
9) Your PC should now reboot. If it doesn't, just power it off and on again. Remember to remove your Windows CD!

Voila! If it can be fixed, I reckon that will fix it!

Good luck, let me know how you go!

4 Steps to success

1) Kick it alot
2) If that doesn't work, kick some more
3) In the event of step 2 not working, hit it with a sledge hammer
4)Keep hitting it with the hammer till it works

I like that ^^^^ idea.

Well there it boots up and says there is an error with the disk with some INF files missing. Iv been told to borrow some one elses disk as its only for boot up.

You got a windows home edition one? Some of them don't have it as an option.... what do you mean when you say it doesn't work?
