Its my 18th this year and I've got to choose my gift!

Ive got around £500/600 to play with (some being my own money obviously...)

Now im stuck between a new amp or new guitar...

Ive got my Gibson SG Faded Special which is lovely but only just above entry standard...

Then theres my amp. Orange Crush 30R. Again a good amp! But its SS and only 30watts, not much above entry standard.

Which do you think its of greater importance to replace?

The amp. You can get a nice amp for that money too.

What do you play?

Fender Telecaster MiJ - 1986
Swing T-Through

Ibanez TS9DX

Yea i was thinking the amp because i can always upgrade the guitar at a later date, the SG will certainly do to get by on! You can get Second Hand ENGL Screamers 50 for that price range! If i were to get an amp it would have to be a really good one. something that would increase in value with age, rather than decrease...

The Orange Rockerverbs are nice, but they dont have enough gain for my liking...

Indie through rock. A mix of Foo fighters, Funeral for a friend, arctic monkeys and muse. So soft overdrive through to "gainy" rock!

Sounds like an Orange Rocker 30 for you.

I wouldnt of thought they had enough gain. I suppose if i wasnt satisfied enough with the distortion the clean channel warrants it! Could always put a screamer infront of it...

Exactly. Orange Rocker 30 is RIGHT up your street mate. Chuck in an overdrive for the hell of it and you're well away! Go second hand too so you get it cheaper and with the speaker broken in. It sounds WAY better when the speaker has been used a bit.

Edit: They are probably more gainy than you'd think mate. I can happily play stuff like Megadeth and even Avenged Sevenfold (in my defense, I hate the band but love the riffs) with my hot pups in my PGM. Chuck the TS9 in too and you've got a really hot and tight sound. Way hotter than anything you've said you want to play.

Epic! Cheers Also, would there be much advantage going Head/Cab? Combo is easier on the transportation side. But as a long term investiment, would head/cab not be easier? Would surely make any future upgrades easier...?

Word.

The Rocker 30 is a beast of an amp for a fairly reasonable price. Lack of reverb would always annoy me if I had one, but aside from that and the clean channel control, it's pretty much the perfect mid price range amp.

So is the Head/Cab worth the extra investment in a seperate cab as opposed to the combo...Also, how much am i looking for a decent cab? 4x12 is a bit excessive, maybe 2x12 is more realistic.

get an orange rocker

they will sound the same but try the head and cab up against the combo

in the end its what u think will be more beneficial in the future, personally would go head and cab cos i would love any amp if i had a big orange cab

^ It's not hype when you actually have one and have used it for a year in gigging and recording.

Get the combo and see how you feel with it mate? That's what I'd say. I'm adding a 1x12 cab for a little extra bottom end, but seriously, I don't need it. It's just me and my GAS.
