He used 13 gauge strings (sometimes up to 17s!) and tuned half a step down. His tone is from a cranked Super Reverb (Or other fender tube amp?) and maybe a tubescreamer as a little mid boost. He switched his pickups alot and picked REALLY hard on the strings. He also used the rounded side of the pick and hit all the strings at once and muted them with his left hand. IMO alot of his tone is technique and some of it is amp and guitar. You can probably get really close with a good technique and your amp a little more than slighty overdriven on the clean channel or even on the gain channel.

A HUGE lol and a slightly larger facepalm.

I forgot to add the SRV uses a little bit of reverb in his sound.
