Answer: unless you're making it from scratch, and even then, it's gonna be hard to build a guitar from scratch for $300. You can barely buy a neck prepared for an FR and an OFR from warmoth for $410. It's expensive, that's all I can say.
Current Gear:
LTD MH-400 with Gotoh GE1996T (EMG 85/60)
PRS SE Custom 24 (Suhr SSH+/SSV)
Ibanez RG3120 Prestige (Dimarzio Titans)
Squier Vintage Modified 70s Jazz V
Audient iD22 interface
Peavey Revalver 4, UAD Friedman BE100/DS40
Adam S3A monitors

You CAN play anything with anything....but some guitars sound right for some things, and not for others. Single coils sound retarded for metal, though those who are apeshit about harpsichord probably beg to differ.

Then don't buy from warmoth. My build cost under $300-

$8- 1x3x48" piece of hard maple- two neck blanks
$24- 1x8x60" piece of hard maple- body wings
$15- 1/4x8x60 piece of cherry- neck laminate and body laminate
~$30 on veneers
$20- hardtail fender-style bridge
$60- one humbucker
$40- tuners
$17- precut, preslotted fretboard (rosewood)
$10- frets
$30- electronics and knobs
~$30- sandpaper and tools

All for around $285 bucks.

but it is still possible to build cheaply

the guitar i made end up costing me £160 approx
walnut body, sperzals

well the wood was free and a neck of ebay and then no name generic humbuckers it is quite easy to get the price down but still have a few decent parts.

I remember seeing a picture of a strat that a guy built in the Customizing Gallery that was under, well I think $400, maybe $300, but I duno. It looked nice, and said that he used parts from Ebay and some from here.

So, I guess, if you find good and cheap parts on Ebay then that should be good.

Those prices are pretty good. I have 3 solidbodies in the works right now, 2 bolt-ons, 1 mahogany set neck, and each one of them will cost me a bit under $500 each. Decent dry wood can be found cheap with some patience, but I prefer to buy wood that has been dried and prepared specifically for guitar building, and quality hardware and electronics cost a premium.

But with a few compromises, sub-$300 quality builds are definitely possible...

Yeah, I got all of my wood at a local lumberyard- I had to dig some, but I managed to find a few good pieces. And cheap.

if you build the body and neck from scratch, and sacrifice a little on pickups and hardware, you can do it. it is even possible to go as low as $200, but that took me weeks of research to find cheap parts. then i found guitarfetish
Gibson SG Faded
Epi VJ Stack
