What is your favorite type of Jazz III pick? My friend gave me an H3 Tortex pick, I really like it, I think I slightly prefer the black nylon Jazz III's. What type of material/size pick do you prefer?

Is there any real difference between the Black and Red Jazz III's?

I think so, Brain, but where would we buy rubber pants at this hour?

If we did tune using the 5th fret on the G string it'd be a C. At the moment it goes G B which stands for George Bush. So obviously GB doesn't want you to C the truth! To the conspiracy cave!

Once you go jazz... there's no way back

That's so true. Normal picks feel so clumsy now.

Also, to whoever asked the red Jazz III's do sound a bit brighter to me but it's not a big difference at all. I read somewhere that this difference in sound actually does exist, something about the way the dye bonds with the nylon.

+1 I carry a jazz pick in my wallet and change pocket at all times because I find it hard to play w/o one.

I prefer the ultex ones because the attack is a little sharper and they don't wear down as fast.

A couple months ago I went to go see Rodrigo and Gabriella play and at the end of the show I held up my ultex pick and rodrigo reached through the crowd and exchanged picks with me (he uses the black jazz IIIs), but then I dropped it!
Luckily I speak spanish and was able to scream to him what happened and he went back towards his gear and gave me another one.

Ultex. They don't wear; practically bullet-proof.

The ultex does wear. I thought the same thing when I first got them. Of course, they wear significantly slower than the black ones.

I'm considering using a new pick. I've been using the same one for a year now.

This is unrelated but do you guys have that really annoying banner ad load every once in a while on this site that makes this beeping noise. It drives me crazy.

I say black sharp stiffo> red > ultex. only because the ultex are clear and get lost when dropped. And I can feel a significant difference between the red and black. The red seem to have a bit more give to them.

i agree. the red are a little softer.

Of course Ultex wears. Mine was an exaggeration. They wear exceedingly less than any polymer pick costing under $10. Better?

The only pick I've played that's better than the Ultex material is the Red Bear Tortis picks.

They are designed more for precision picking over chords, but I agree. Unless it's a power chord, the sound of the pick is very obious.

what I am wondering is if people who play jazz actually prefer these picks...

I know Jazz players prefer heavier picks as they generally use heavier strings. A jazz player would likely use one of the more blunt tips of the pick.
