hey everyone, i just started playing guitar awhile ago, around Mid January.. i started on a Yamaha accustic, and now i have a Fender Squire Strat~

I'm at a stand still, i don't know what i should be doing or playing.. So my question to you guys is,

What did you do to get started way back when playing?

I can do a few simple riffs, like the intro to beast and the harlot.. lol
and a few simple songs like Trogdor (no solo)

Any help would be awesome, i really have the urge to get good, but i have reached a brick wall and don't know what to do!!!

really, REALLY unnecessary comment

anyway, if you haven't already, start by learning plenty of chords. as mentioned, learn the pentatonic scales, they're usually the most helpful. from there you can go into individual note picking and keep going further in.

good luck!!

learn all of the notes, learn how to tune your guitar, learn all modes of every pentatonic scale, ditch your squire and save up for a mexican strat, and never never ever give up

i started 4 years ago and didnt get serious about playing until 4 months ago. im not great but im actually decent now and its all because i decided one night to pick my guitar back up and since i couldnt stop

start in punk. power chord driven songs are the easyest to learn and play. then as you improve learn a few folk songs, this 'ill teach you chord progressions. then go classic rock and/or metal. the parts for metal songs tend to be simple but fast, so you will need to develop strong rythm and finger strength.

keep going friend. you'll hit dozens of platues where it seems like you stop progressing/learning, then things suddenly make sense and you no longer have to concentrate to finger chords or progressions or riffs.

keep it up.

if you are determined, play things that are a bit too difficult for you.

kept me interested, and made me a better player.

also READ everything you can about music technique. immerse yourself within it if you really want to get good.

practice! and if you read enough, youll know what to practice. there is a great amount of joy in teaching yourself.
