I have selected these works for the first book we're going to read. Sorry, but it had to come down to these, but someone had to make the choice and a poll. Someone else can take over for the next book.

Brave New World, by Adolus Huxley
Ulysses, by James Joyce
Also Sprach Zarathustra, by Freidrich Nietzche
Walden, by Henry David Thoreau
The Divine Comedy, by Dante Alilghieri
Metamorphoses, by Ovid
Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck
Life of Pi - Yann Martel
The Hero With A Thousand Faces, by Joseph Campbell
Kite Runner, by Khaled Hosseini

Thought I would put it here too:

"DON'T VOTE FOR OF MICE AND MEN. IT IS OUT OF CONTENTION!"

Is Kite Runner a story about a guy who ends up leaving his girlfriend for his friend's ex-girlfriend?
And his brother gets AIDS from a homosexual experience with his best friend?

Sorry, those were the main points that stuck out in my head.

I think Of Mice And Men isn't a good book to do because EVERYONE should know that book, simply because of school matters.

Dude Gandalf, what the hell. You've been here for a year now and don't know how to make a poll? Fail.

Edit: well in that case, Metamorphoses all the way.
Thus sayeth the Lord.

I thought Meta was done by Khafka? Or is it another book? I'd like to read Kite Runner because I've read all but one of those books, and I've never read a book about Kites before.

I have no idea about Kite Runner. I have heard it's a good book, so I put it on the list. What should I replace Of Mice And Men with?

Hey man!

I am so pissed off that I didn't order Ovid's Metamorphoses instead of a different book on mythology. I voted for it regardless.
Miss Scourge? PM me.

I vote for Nietzsche, because I have it, and I have one of his damn quotes stuck in my head, "Blessed are the forgetful, for they get the better even of their blunders." Damn Eternal Sunshine, anyways, I take that as a sign.

I think we close the poll Saturday afternoon, at 12 p.m GMT, so people have a chance to go to the library and stuff. We can start the reading Monday?

Please, that book sucked. And it made me lose some manliness and some coolness I had because I read it.

Yeah, but I'd like to read Phillip K Dick again.

Some are always better the second time through. Nietzsche though? That will be some tough stuff.

If you don't see your book on the list, it does not mean we will never read it. This is just to get the whole thing started. So, please cast a vote to get this started.

Zarathustra FTW.
None are more hopelessly enslaved than those who falsely believe they are free.
#33
Wow, I feel like such an intellectual having read three of those books.

Im only halfway through Zarathustra though and it's quite difficult to grasp. The Divine Comedy is great as well, and Brave New World after that.
And what is more, there's been a bloody purple nose and some bloody purple clothes that were messing up the lobby floor. It's just apartment house rules so all you 'partment fools remember : one man's ceiling is another man's floor.

I voted for Of Mice and Men. It's a short, easy-to-read novel but at the same time there's a lot in it we can analyse. I would have voted for Ulysses but it would be nice if everyone would have finsished the book by Christmas.
#36
Come on Walden...

... no hope in Hell.

I had to read Brave New World last year in English, good thing I slacked off and didn't read it, and I have my own copy too.

EDIT: Also, I loved Of Mice and Men so much, but it's one that everyone does in English class eventually, and it only takes around 1.5-2 hours to finish cover to cover. So I'm not sure if something that short is a great choice for this book club.

No, Thus Spake Zarathrustra is very readable. It's like a fairy tale. One of my favorite books. I think you guys should read that. I might reread it with you.

As far as tough goes, I've yet to be able to make it through Uylessess. Can't get into it.

edit: voted for Dante, never read him yet.
