I haven't yet heard a Falkenbach release I didn't like, but if you're more into the folky aspect then this one:

Ok Nefna Tysvar Ty

and if more into the black metal part these two:

Heralding - The Fireblade
...En Their Medh Riki Fara...

Many thanks.

On another topic: How's Bathory's Nordland albums? Yea or nay? I've been meaning to check them out, but have never gotten around to it.

Yes! I love their cleans. Favourite album? I listen to TF pretty much every day.

I really like them - they're the first 2 Bathory albums I got.

Youtube them to see what you think, the style is consistent through both albums.

I've got to say that I haven't listened to that much Vintersorg. I should though.

But what I've heard so far, Till Fjälls and Cosmic Genesis are pretty badass.

Would you call Elvenking folk metal?

I always wondered if they were considered it or just power metal?

(Minus The Scythe, of course)

Any recommendations of Celtic metal bands?

For Celtic, try Primordial, Aes Dana, Cruachan, Heol Telwen and Mael Mordha (although these guys are doom rather than folk, but celtic nonetheless).

#50
Yeah!

Bathorys two Nordland albums have been rather overlooked so far.
I love nearly everything he has released.

I've read on MA that they were power folk, so I guess.

There is nothing folk about them in the slightest. Pure epic heavy metal, nothing else.

They have folk subject matter, a general epic folky feel, and little folky licks and acoustics sections.

Solstice have acoustic sections and a 'folky' feel, much more so than Doomsword, does that make them folk doom? Not at all. Same goes for Bathory, now I mention it.

The best example of 'folk doom' is Mael Mordha.

yeah imo Doomsword would be folk metal in the sense of Bathory, whom I don't really consider folk

but does it really matter, awesome band nonetheless

Bathory have folk abums too! Nordland I and II are pure folk.

And I know Mael Mordha already. The folk sound they have is undeniable so I don't know what to say to you.

Can't let this thread die...

In any event, I just got ahold of Windir's 1184. Incredible black metal, definitely a breath of fresh air, although I'm still a bit "ehhh" on the synth/keyboard parts. It'll probably grow on me, though.

So, I pretty much have all my folk metal band basics down, what are some more lesser-known yet equally awesome folk metal bands out there? The more epic the better.

#79
Doomsword.

Borknagar and Vintersorg are 2 of my favorite folk bands. Cosmic Genesis is one of my favorite albums of all time and Borknagar's criminally underrated The Archaic Course and Quintessence provide me with my much needed fix of ICS Vortex.
