You're safe with either Iron or their self-titled. Both are great, although I like Iron a bit more.

Anyone know any black metal bands with a focus on atmosphere, and have just a touch of folk? Like Ulver, Drudkh, Wolves In The Throne Room, etc.

ummm,.. I'm not sure if you know these already, but most of Eastern Europe bands have just that...

so for now, I'd recommend Astrofaes, Kroda, to a lesser extent Hate Forest, Velimor, and also Dub Buk. Obviously you already know Temnozor', but try and hunt down Horizons this time around, and their earlier efforts. Will be well worth your while

This thread needs way more Eluveitie, especially for the guy who said he was into celtic folk metal.
Thank god there's a thread for this because i love folk metal.

I just bought a couple of In Extremo albums that i don't know the names of and definetly can't pronounce them.

I know they're a folk/power crossover but, what do people think of Alestorm?

I'm really digging Windir's 1184 album, though I'm not as huge of a fan of their other albums. 1184's Journey to the End is a great song, especially with that sweet 5 minute techno "breakdown", if you will.

Man Im telling you, 1184 is unreal!
I think its my favourite Windir, I dunno, it just has this kickass feel.

Ah boys though, he died way before his time I think.
At least he died surrounded by the native land he loved so much.

Eluveitie are awesome, I haven't heard much other folk metal though, need to check out some of the bands you guys mentioned...

And I love Alestorm. At least, Captain Morgan's Revenge is really awesome, I don't really listen to the other songs much - they seem kinda mediocre in comparison. It's like a pirate epic, gets the blood pumping every time.

I never got into Alestrom or Eluveitie. I think there is certainly a very large split in Folk Metal,
between those influenced primarily by Black Metal and those like Eluveitie who get their influence from Melodic Death Metal. I have just always seemed to naturally feel more drawn to those who use Black Metal as the medium to encorporate the Folk. Sounds more primitive, dark and real for me.

I prefer black influenced folk too. And in the same vein, bands that are inspired mostly by folk, and just add a bit of thrashiness to the music.

Don't like Alestorm either.

I think most folks (lol) will agree that folk mixed with black metal is the best mixture. And then have you bands like Agalloch who mixed melodeath (or Katatonia-esque doom/death, either one really) with black metal on Pale Folklore.

Falls of Rauros is currently rocking my socks off. The first half of the song A Silent Premonition is amazing. I'll be getting a hold of their new album today.

Need reccomends!

Love Elvenking, Tuatha de Denan are okay, love Falconer too, and Skyclad are fairly cool but...I need more. But nothing with ****ty gutteral vocals all the way through like the majority of folk metal (SUCH a disappointment, so many fantastic bands with great music, ruined by the vocals....)
#146
Fintroll, Horslips and latest Cruachan.

Man go to the reccomendation thread then come back and let us know what you think of the bands youve discovered, a good way of finding some decent Folk Metal is by flicking through this thread at the discussions, find out the opinion of people, find names of new bands etc

good luck

Lol, since when did a majority of folk metal use gutterals?

Regardless, I'm gonna assume you don't like harsh vocals at all, so you should check out Primordial's latest album. And Agalloch, even though they have higher pitched harsh vocals. Deal with it.

Didn't realise there was a folk metal recommend thread anywhere, I'll try and find it.

Not a fan of Cruachan, find them too cringeworthy, and the vocals for fintroll are too gutteral for me.

Since when? Since always, nearly every band I've sampled does. Finntroll, Thyrfing, Ensiferum, Bathory, Turisas I think Cruachan also in places make heavy use of it, but I didn't like them enough to listen to much...I could go on.

I just really want to find more bands similar to Elvenking in terms of vocals - forgot to mention I also like Lothloryen - sounds exactly like Damnagoras from Elvenking,

That's, a lot to process. Would be nice if people could reccomend bands that fit into my taste, it'd be a lot of effort to go through all of them when some people would already know the answer :p

You don't read it all, you just ask for recommendations there. Just ask the same thing you did here, except in that thread, minus the harsh vocal bashing. Because if you do, chances are it'll just be ignored.

So people are actually going to not make any recommendations on folk metal, here in the folk metal thread?

Oh, I did, there's just an awful lot there to process. Don't really fancy wasting several hours of my day trying to find samples of each of those in the vague hope that one of them might be good. That, and the list doesn't give any impression whatsoever what any of those bands or like.

Just some helpful pointers would be good. Kind of liking the sound of Horslip that someone mentioned a few posts back.
