but for the time it came out!
The way they mixed the key and rhythm with black metal at a time where it hadnt been done before, its so raw and genuine.
A perfect blend of Irish trad with the most extreme of metal

(i have the version with Erin Song, Return and Oró btw, 3 quality tracks)

They had no other band to base their results on, other than their own concept and vision. Unlike Folk Metal today where there is a wide range of easily accesible bands to get ideas and compare styles. Cruachan pulled that stuff out of nowhere..

So much potential... to waste (in my opinion)

So to all you Ensiferum fans, how do you feel about Petri doing vocals now? Do you dig the old CDs way more than the new one? I have their newest one and it's alright, but not too great. Which Ensiferum CD would you recommend?

Jari > Petri anyday, but the latter does a damn good job.

I'd recommend Iron, ****ing fantastic record

I'm sorry I didnt listen to ye sooner.. Their musicmanship is savage, to the point where they really transcend the boundaries of "folk" metal..

Definitely. At least you've gotten around to it now. Savage band.

That was the first Cruachan album I got a long time ago and I found it really meh

It was decent, but something crucial was missing

Yeah, I liked Cruachan for a while, but now I tend to find them meh in general.

I agree with 11thHour though. They truly were pioneers of their subgenre, and were doing new and innovative things in the celtic folk metal section before pretty much everyone else. At the same time, they didn't pull it off nearly as successfully as a lot of the bands that followed in their fottsteps.

Meh, Ensiferum are good, but they're really only a gateway band into folk.

Jari > Petri. Orchid > Morninrise.

So, I've recently checked out Eluveitie and Moonsorrow which I should have done earlier. I liked what I heard and wanted some recommendations for good albums to start out with.
#171
the only one i have is Slania, which is awesome
all i've heard of Spirit is "Your Gaulish War", which is also awesome
#172
They have two albums.

Get the first one, then the second one.

Unless you're a big melodeath fan - then do it the other way around.

I'm not too lost with Eluevitie, but I am so with Moonsorrow. They have several albums and all of which are in a language foreign to me. I've liked what I've heard and I can't let that stop me from great music.

Do you need any album recs with Moonsorrow then?

Or are you alright?

Ah, this thread lives!

So, hm, am I the only one who enjoyed Falls of Rauros' new album? Very Ulver-ish in some parts, but they've got a good style going on. Not to mention the production on that album is absolutely amazing (not in the clear, polished sense, far from it). It sounds so... natural.

So yeah, if you like Agalloch and/or Ulver, check 'em.
#179
Continuing my Agalloch break.

They began to bore me.

Overlistening and whatnot.

Profugus Mortis just released two new songs. Very epic tracks. definately has some folk influence, and both have become a favorite of mine. Pick up there first album as well, fantastic band.
#181
Anyone here like Doomsword? I think they would be considered folk metal. Btw, Ensiferum was mentioned in the power metal thread (dont know why they are folk) and they are awesome.

If you're talking to me (as I assume you are), good Doomsword albums to start with would be Let Battle Commence and Resound the Horn. I really like those. Though actually Doomsword is probably more of an epic doom metal band but whatever.

Iron/Ensiferum> Victory Songs

So this is why no-one is posting in the Ensiferum Thread.

Goblins Dance>All

I love the chorus.

LA LALALALA LAA LALIE! LAlA LALALALA LAA LALIE!

What does everyone think of Tears? I love it but i laugh at the broken English.

Can anyone suggest any similar bands? I would think you could since this is the folk metal thread.
#188
My favourite are Korpiklaani, Ensiferum, but I need to listen to a whole lot more. Any suggestions?

Hey guys, just started writing a Folk Metal tune, just wondering what the folk metal thread thinks of it. Any crit will be appreciated.

That was pretty cool, man. The only thing I don't like were the stops - they got pretty old by the end of that, but the first few times were well executed.
