I find this chord a bit of a stretch right now... i saw it played at the end of a Jazz lick that i'm learning. Is there another chord i could substitue?

E ------------------
B ----------4------
G ----------5------
D ----------8------
A ------------------
E ------------------

You can play those notes anywhere on the fretboard. Chords are not shapes, they are collections of notes.
Someones knowledge of guitar companies spelling determines what amps you can own. Really smart people can own things like Framus because they sound like they might be spelled with a "y" but they aren't.

e|-----
B|--4--
G|--5--
D|-----
A|-----
E|--6--

it will sound slightly different as one of the notes is an octave lower, but it's the same notes so should work.

or:

e|--6--
B|--4--
G|--5--
D|-----
A|-----
E|-----

Keep the notes, but not the same order

Depending on context the voicing can be very important. Substituting one chord might require a few more substitutions as well to keep the voicings good.
