Hey UG ... who here HAS BEEN DIAGNOSED with a mental illness??? Please vote in the poll if you have.

These conditions I've listed are the most common ones, so I apologize if I dont list yours. If I haven't listed it, vote "other".

I'll hazard to guess that 70% of UG THINK they have had depression...but neither they or I know what real depression is.

pff... every person on earth could be diagnosed with some form of mental disorder, we get happy then sad, we get mad and then cry. Are we insane? no, we're human.
#7

+1, well said.

I think the idea of depression is relative and should be considered more of a feeling than a mental disability.

I mean, what one person calls awesome or amazing could be called depressing by someone else.

Being depressed, as a feeling is different than the disease, or mental illness or whatever you want to call it, depression. So no, you are wrong.

There'll probably be a lot of people thinking they have these but misunderstanding it.

Like OCD, a lot of people have it, just not so bad that it controls everything they do.

And nobody will admit to anything either because in most cases people with a mental illness are taken for freaks.

That is all.

Adhd?

Sorry man, I could only list 10

I don't know much about ADHD. It could be more common than half the stuff up there
for all i know

Voted Other.

I know what I have, even if they won't diagnose me with it. Until then psychiatrists will continue to refuse to allow me near them.

diagnosis: extreme paranoia

Well although I've never been diagnosed with it, a few years back I definitely suffered from social anxiety disorder. I was too shy and embarrassed to tell anyone that it was a serious problem, not a huge suprise
#22
anexiety and minor OCD i have had counselling for both after i manifested chronic insomnia and panic attacks for a while.
#23
I made a test on a web site once that told me I had paranoia, was schizotypic (forgot what it means) and had two other mental problems which I forgot about. But then, it's only an internet test.

I have OCD. Not really badly though

yes depression is often used as a feeling but its also a mental illness, when I took psychology I learned it like.
Depression as a feeling is just being really down on yourself and could be relative like you said.
Depression as a mental illness feels like having days 10 times worse then what a normal person would consider the worst day of their life.
#31
Clinical depression also has physical aswell as mental symptoms.

This is so odd to me. Like I hear things with kids who don't pay attention, all of a sudden they have ADHD or something. It's like everything is a disorder or something.

Wow, there's a lot of lying hypochondriacs on UG.

I have been diagnosed with depression in the past, and SAD. For serials, not 'i felt a bit down so posted a myspace bulletin saying i'm suicidal' like the rest of you liars

One psychiatrist actually looked at me and said 'I know what you've got, but I'm not allowed to diagnose you with it. Apparentally England doesn't have people like you.'

Take it as fact or lie, it happened regardless.

The previous two left the office before I did. I spent one session talking to a secretary and psychoanalysing the psychiatrist. I hit a nerve by pure chance and decided to follow it. Good things ensued.

Also, in concerns to Reva. I'm OCD, but only very slightly. I spent a lot of time making things perpendicular, but that's about it.

Depression and ADHD is how psychiatrists say 'I got results, I diagnosed you.' Most of them couldn't care less. Few of them even listen. My last one listened. Nowadays I've lost touch and to be quite honest I miss him immensely. I've never really been depressed. I had a bad patch between college and starting work, but nothing to get really sad about. I have too much to do to do anything stupid.

I couldn't be bothered arguing with the 'depression is a feeling as well as an illness' >__>

To put it in perspective, what I learnt in psychology.

People with depression think things like 'I'm so worthless', 'I hate myself' etc
Most of the people in my class thought that even the idea of that is just silly.

I think I get what you meant. I mean that I didn't think people would actually own up to their disorders, because most people think it's weird.
Like more people voted in the poll yet didn't post in the thread, yes? ^__^;;
Sorry

EDIT: Hm to list my minor OCD-esque things, things have to be in even numbers or a number of 6. Everything has to be tidied to be straight, things have to be facing the same way etc. If something is germy, I will feel really unclean until I wash my hands.

Fun stuff
I'm just thankful it's only that minor.

Depression and autophobia (or more properly, monophobia, though they lump the two definitions together, now).

I have an immense and irrational fear of loneliness and being abandoned, resulting in panic attacks and general anxiety. Took a long time of therapy to alleviate a lot of the problems that resulted from that (including depression), but I'm much better, now. I still have small bouts of panic attacks, but I can usually control them.
Sincerely, Chad.
