We're getting an album out by mid- May, so I would appreciate any advice on how we can market it and basically, sell tons of copies, in about two weeks, and with a low budget.

Here's a list I sent to my Marketing Manager, feel free to add on:

1. Go around to schools, force the bitches to buy them and come back everyday. Wait for them outside the school with hammers and menacing grimaces.

2. Go to music shops, get them to sell the CDs for us, and offer them commission. Once we've sold all, beat the cashier unconscious and steal all the money. Laugh. Hard.

3. Set up a store at Kota Raya/Mydin or similarly dirty places, and hawk the CDs as porno flicks. "Gadis bogel, seks seks Rm10 saja! Support kita punya industri filem la!"

4. Attack people coming down from LRTs and monorails and force them to buy. When they don't, block their way and chant "MOTHER****ER!"

5. Get you to sell to your college mates. Get them to sell to their mates.

6. Sell them at pasar malams and get beaten up by DVD peddlers.

7. Promote it as an amazing VI- produced effort, and get the school to promote it in newspapers. Probability : 0.00001

8. Hijack RTM and - hmm, bad idea.

9. Get SEA Forensics to use it as a soundtrack.

these are in fact, all TERRIBLE ideas... except the one about selling to your college friends.

how about this for a novel idea....

1. Purchase a web address that is easy to remember, or make a myspace page

2. Design a truly eye-catching and memorable poster to promote the album

3. Hang the poster everywhere.

4. Send your album to all the local radio stations for exposure.

5. Tell people about the album.

if the music is good, it will sell... if it's crap, you may have to go back to your plan of hustling the disc as porn tapes.

I think the going to school idea is pretty good

Obviously without the threatening of children...

But school kids are a good target, and the record shop idea was pretty good

Without the robbing of the shop...

Put it on your bands myspace page if you have one. Sell it at your shows. Tell your friends. Other than that there's not much you can do if you don't have some company promoting it, and doing the dirty work. Which is why unsigned bands have such a hard time making it out there.

Call radio first and see if they will even take it. Commercial radio typically won't play you (won't even think about playing you), no matter how good you are, unless you have some kind of distribution deal at least. (unless the station has an indie show or something)

There is always college radio, etc.

Harp away at whatever media you can. Lots of local entertainment tabloids love to do independent stuff; college radio as I said; community cable stations; maybe even a network TV station in your city might even be harangued into doing a spot on you. Play at festivals where people are already there, as opposed to having to get people to come and see you.

Could I get some more talent in the monitors, please?

I know it sounds crazy, but try to learn to inhale your voice. www.thebelcantotechnique.com
