;

What do you use a semi colon for? I never see them used on this site even by the grammar Nazi's, only really in books and i was never actually taught what you use them for in my 5 years of English.

To me its like a mixture of a full stop and comma but i just don't get it, if you have those then what do you use it for?
#3
It joins two sentences together closer than they would be if there were a full stop there. It can be used to replace a conjunction and it can be used as a stronger punctuation mark than a comma when commas are being used for other purposes.

EDIT: ^ Yes, and winks.

It can be used when listing or when making two related but seperate points.

The power to feel with others give.

Yeah that i don't get, why would it matter how close they are? If i am reading something i don't think, oh there is a semi colon the sentences are closer together. I just read it.

yeah, you connect two complete thoughts in one sentence.

ex. tom went to the store to buy some lemonade; there wasnt any at the store.

i dont know why someone cant combine them but oh well.

This.

You can sometimes get away with replacing a colon with a semicolon as the effect that is made is pretty much the same.

Completely wrong. That is a colon. "Favorite bands: Black Sabbath..."

A semicolon is used when you would say ", and" or ", but," such as: (see the colon?)

I'm going to the movies; she's going home.

That guitar is expensive; this one is a bit more in my range...

Yeah, the listing with semi-colons is more in the format of sentences rather than items.

Blah, blah blah; blah blah; blah blah.
#25
Now I'm gonna use semicolons more then ever before! They really help a sentence; most people are confused by their use anyway!

I bet you don't.

I can think of two uses. One is for a list, like if you're comparing numbers over a thousand.

"They have 1,000; 3,000; and 2,000 goats." So no one gets confused with the numbers.

And the other I know is for connecting two independent clauses that express similar ideas.

"I can't buy tickets; I don't have enough money."
#28
Semicolons, when used correctly, often impress markers if you're in school. Using one isn't going to affect your mark greatly, but if you impress your marker you're more likely to get a slight advantage over someone with the same points as you. Make sure you don't overuse them or misuse them though!

When you want to write two independent clauses that are closely related. or one immediately follows the other, one can use a semicolon.

For example:

Jack and Jill went up the hill; they came down with a pail of water.

or

The ocean was choppy and the sky was overcast; it looked like it would rain.
The medium is the message!

I use it on UG all the time; I quite like semicolons.
