I'm a total nub when it comes to jazz guitar in general but...I'm working on it! It'd be great if anyone could give me some simple songs/stuff/recommendations to learn-working slowly through two separate books for basic blues and jazz but I'd really like to find some time off of the scales and triads and whatnot...

So, any suggestions on what I should try out?

well, you should know your 13th chords, 7th chords, augmented chords, etc. The jazz I've played required a lot of those. And to be completely honest, the best thing you can do to learn jazz is join a jazz band or go to some jazz shows. You live in california, so that shouldn't be TOO difficult. At least your not in the middle of nowhere.
That's all I can tell you. I don't consider myself to be a jazz guitarist, but for my school's band I had to become one for a few months, and that's what helped me the most. Chord knowledge and experience that came from playing with a jazz band.
good luck
