Evening Pit,

I've been having some trouble with my PC. I got it about a year ago and it works pretty well. I'm running Windows XP home edition because like 2 weeks after getting it I got a really bad virus, and had to reinstall windows. (it came with Media Center). Anyway, I usually leave it on almost all day, because after I think 30 min it sleeps. BUT whenever I leave it on for around 2-3 hours, even if its not sleeping, (on and off using it) when I go back on everything works very badly. For example everything is slow and the computer freezes constantly when doing even very small tasks. Also when streaming video from youtube, or just even watching a video on my computer it constantly freezes and hickups all the time. So I have to reboot my computer everytime I want to do something.

For the first couple hours it works brilliantly.

Does anyone know what could be causing this?
It's very annoying.

Open the case and but a vacume cleaner to it sounds like an over heating problem to me.

If that doesnt work try reinstalling

Might be a ram issue. How much ram do you have (1 year old id guess 1 gig?) could also be a program (maybe anti virus or something) that's using a lot of your ram or that doesn't purge the ram when its done with it. check in task manager to see if there are any processes using obscene amounts of memory

Come on, everyone knows the eight steps to success

1) Kick the PC til you see signs of improvement
2) Kick it some more
3) If it's still not working (although it should be) get out the sledge hammer
4) Put the sledge hammer away and set it on fire
5) Get a mac
6) Use the mac
7) ?
8) Profit!!

I actually just reinstalled windows a few months ago again because they said they sent me Media Center, but it was just Home Edition again.

I have 2 GB of ram and I use Avast Antivirus and Zone Alarm firewall.

My next computer will be a mac...

EDIT: I'm not an idiot (to system 32 guy)

and I usually check task manager everytime I go on, my sister has a bad habit of letting stupid programs run.

Upgrade RAM, blow the dust out of your case and all the fans, do a disk cleanup and a defragment.

Well then. I'm at a loss. I say smack that bitch up. Not like it can make it any worse.

EDIT : how much HD space do you have? I'd be amazed if a 1 year old hard drive is low on space... but who knows what you do with you time.... jk

just cause you cant figure out the problem doesnt mean that PC's suck.

ask someone who actually knows, instead of ultimateguitar forums.

^^

on topic: try running a different anti-virus program to double check, also as someone already said it could be a ram problem so look into upgrading that. Also after it starts playing up look in task manager and see if any programs are running that shouldnt be that might be slowing it down

I highly doubt it's the anti-virus. I use avast and it hasn't let me down once. And also if it is ram, it wouldn't be because he needs more, he's got two gigs. It would be a program not using ram properly and either taking more than it needs or not purging what it no longer needs.

Well that's not the only reason I don't like PC's.
Stop jumping to conclusions.
