1. Read the FAQ. Lots of great options (and pictures!)
2. What's your budget?
3. Remember you need a bass amp.

Check out local music shops and look into any used bass, play it and compare it to others you're interested it. Then get a good amp

remember the amp matters a lot more than the bass

Is there such a thing as a heavy riff with out chugging on the e string?

if u look in the bass forum theres an FAQ with beginner bass stuff in it. i wont be a prick like some bass forum guys and bitch at you because a pbass and jbass cant do everything.

seeing as you like metal i would suggest maybe an ibanez SR, GSR or SRX. i have an ibanez SRX2EX1 and the guys at my school with high end basses (spectors, warwick) reckon its great. they are also pretty light and have a thin fast neck for metal stuff. it also sounds great for slap but i get a little string buzz which can be annoying. also try looking at mid range squiers like the p-bass special because they can be quite a versatile bass. squier basses arent as bad as squier guitars most of the time

i advise looking thru the guitar center site as well as some of these
http://www.ibanez.com/bass/series.aspx?s=srx
http://www.ibanez.com/bass/series.aspx?s=sr
http://www.ibanez.com/bass/series.aspx?s=gsr
http://www.squierguitars.com/products/search.php?partno=0321500543

by the way would you play pick, finger or slap style?

^ I have a SRX390 and I basically have the same story... I replaced the bassist for one band and he had a $700 Fender

cool. mines urs with black hardware and magnets in the pickups and no binding on the neck, just the body. they look killer and sound great for metal. thru a crappy guitar amp u get a great distortion.
