I need some help—I’ve been playing for about 2 years now and I’m having trouble figuring out how to match a band’s sound. For example, Sweet Emotion by Aerosmith, or any guitar solo in any song… I have a nice Vox amp, the one that has about 11 different amp models built into it. I realize I don’t have a Marshall stack or anything.. but you’d think I’d be able to get a similar sound. What am I doing wrong? And also—what effects are guitar players using when they solo? When I try a solo part it sounds nothing like the band’s…

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

There are many reasons, you won't get their exact sound.

1) you don't have their gear. The Vox is a good amp but you'll only get close.
2) you are not them. They say tone is in the fingers, well that's not technically true, but it does affect how you hear things
3) Their sound has been recorded and gone through studio prcessing, which you can't do.

Your best bet is just to keep playing around, and be satisfied with what you've got.
