ok guys, here's the deal. we need a new, organized "what songs" thread. i'm going to break this thread into categories. i will make a separate post for each song category and make the first post a table of contents with links to each subsequent post. here are the categories i've come up with initially.

12 String Songs
Beginner Songs
Campfire Songs
Capo Songs
Church/Religious Songs
Classical Guitar Songs
Country Songs
Different Tunings Songs
Difficult Songs
Fingerstyle Songs
Impress Girls Songs
Intermediate Songs
Just Open Chords Songs
Learn to Sing Along Songs
Rock Songs
Two Guitars Songs

each category will have a post dedicated to it. this way a person can come here and quickly find exactly the type of songs they are looking for without sorting through posts and suggestions that are not relevant to their interests.

for now, i want everyone to make suggestions on other categories. the list above is just what i came up with right now. this thread is also now open to general suggestions regarding what you would like to see in the "what songs" thread.

you will also notice i have created another thread with a similar title. that thread will be the actual what songs thread. i have it closed now so that i can get it fully sorted out before it gets stickied and opened up. if you want to see what i have in mind, go here:

what is giong to be the cut off for beginer and intermediate songs, strum patterns barre chords what not. i sense a lot of this belongs here that belongs there discussion so above
all else i recommend some rules to acompany said genres. but yeah this looks great maybe they do put yall in charge for a reason lolz.

^--- well i don't know that there can easily be clear lines drawn between what is considered a beginner song and an intermediate song and between an intermediate song and a difficult song. basically when we have the categories all decided on, i'm going to open the actual "what songs" thread and then people can suggest songs there. the user that suggests the song will also suggest the category or categories to place the song in.

all people certainly have their own opinions on what is considered easy or hard, so i suppose that i will just have the final decision as to whether a song is labeled beginner, intermediate, or difficult level. i will try to be as consistent and objective as i can with classifying the songs.

also guys... what does everyone think about having an official "what acoustic?" thread set up the same way. categories could be price ranges. obviously there would be detailed information about each guitar in such a thread... not just a list.

i've started the official "what songs" thread. if you want to see what i have in mind, go here:

Fantastic idea. Good category list btw, I honestly can't think of any more necessary categories.

I am very much in favor of a new "What Acoustic" thread with price ranges.

Also, are you going to organize by difficulty for the classical pieces and such? I will add more here in a little bit

Great idea.

If you're adding Nuetral Milk Hotel, put "King of Carrot Flowers" somewhere...

If this stops the "Songs to impress Girls" threads, I will be eternally thankful.

^ I wouldn't hold your breath. It just means we'll have some place convenient to send them

More on topic, it looks good to me so far. I have some thoughts that I'll add later.

excellent. keep the suggestions for categories and general input coming.

Good thread is good. I agree with it. I assume more than one category can be taken up per song, like beginner and open chording songs?
#17
^ Yeah, that gets kind of tricky.

Should we go through the old thread, and try to place the 9 pages of songs into these categories?

I feel like it might take some of the work out of this.

thats what i'm talking about.

definitely. a lot of songs will likely fall into 2 or more categories.

I'll volunteer if I'm allowed to start on the weekend.

We could do a page per user at 40postperpage.

anyone's help is always appreciated. and i'll give anyone that helps credit in the thread. so you'd have UG immortality going for you... which is nice.

caddyshack... anyone? bueller... bueller?

another thought could we add links where applicable. it would be nice to be able to open a tab then hit back page button and be back at list versus searching for tabs and having to back thru three or four pages.
#21
^-- yeah i've been thinking about adding a link to a good tab for each song... it's just gonna take forever

Maybe a little more info on the ones over there. Like you could take away all the songs (like don't copy over from old thread) and just start over with a recommendation post that we all say the songs and categories.

It is a lot easier with info like:

Song name, Artist, Tuning, youtube link, tab link, etc.

Not just the song name.

I really do like the thread though! It's a great idea!

I started going through the big thread a little bit...and I'm thinking we should probably add a folk song category to the list. I'd hate to relegate all of Dylan's music, for instance, to the campfire category or something like that.

I think Difficult songs is too vague, like a lot of fingerpicking/classical songs are insanely difficult.

Different tuning can be taken out completely because that's basically a subdivision ( Great song btw) of all the others. It can fall into classical songs, fingerpicking songs, campfire, and all the rest, so it really isn't necessary.

^--- i think it is necessary because there are people who are looking for a list of difficult songs. i tried to make the categories topics that people often make request threads for. there will be a lot of songs that fall into more than one category, but that's ok. for instance, the capo category could be removed also because every song in that category could go in another. but it is a necessary category because often times users are looking for songs to play with a capo.

and jon, feel free to add a folk category to the thread!
#29
^ Awesome.

Just pick a page (i kinda started on the first page) and just place the songs in which ever categories you think are appropriate. Then you can PM either Jim or I with your list, and we'll update the thread.

Thanks!

since I don't frequent this forum, I don't really know what's going on here but I'd like to use this

so is the list you're making up anywhere yet or is it still "under construction?"

I really suggest the stuff tha Boyce Avenue's lead singer Alejandro Mandaza's been playing on Youtube. It really gets every single song that we all recognize and transofrm into beautiful songs. They also are really fun to sing along so I suggest them to anyone who want to play for the ladies or just for fun.
#37
How about a category for favorite Youtube videos/lessons/artists?

There are some good ones that have helped me alot and people who are really good.
#38
Quote by confusius
that's full of distorted electric guitars...

yeah in the studio recording it is... but it's still a great song to play on acoustic... especially with two acoustics.

i would not call it a beginner song though. more like intermediate imo.
#39
Remove the capo song category, because you can play anything with a capo, as you said before. There is simply no point, because people are not going to search for songs to play with a capo, rather country songs, rock songs, beginner songs, etc.
