I'm not sure how I'm going to record my music when I get to that stage, but I should I pick this up anyways just in case?

Well, that depends. Is it an SM57 A or B?
The B is more commonly used for singing/recording vocals, while the A is more commonly used for instruments.

It is a good mic regardless, I own one of each, A and B, and they work well for me.

That's a good instrument mic, you'll find a few of those in like 95% of venues and studios. It's my preference for micing up amps, and you can get away with on percussion, although it's not strictly a drum mic.
