I just got myself my first twelve string acoustic and I was wondering if anyone who has some experience with them could share some tips and maybe suggests some songs that highlight the extra strings well musically.
Thanks.

Wow that John Butler was amazing but his right hand was gross with his long finger nails. Whatever, he sounds good.
Thank you for sharing that.

My #1 tip is tune to Eb standard. As well as relieving strain on the guitar by lowering the string tension it makes it a lot easier to play.

My #2 tip is that everything you can play on 6 string you can play on 12, but chord progressions sound particularly good.

/e: I just noticed your sig. I think Purple Haze sounds great on 12 string. The intro works really well with the double octaves.

The Silent Man by Dream Theater is one of my favourite songs to play on my 12 string.
Plus, check out other John Butler songs, pretty much all his stuff is played on an 11 string (12 string minus the octave G string) guitar.

Any idea why he has such long fingernails on his, ahem, PICKING hand? And if that wasn't enough of a hint for you, try this. FINGERPICKING! IS! NOT! GROSS!

Nosepicking is gross... Fingerpicking is not!

I agree with harmonising 1 half of the strings, the sound produced is absolutely beautiful.

I didn't mean finger picking was gross, I mean his nails were gross. They were all yellow and long, and I don't know, they disturbed me. I know that they help with finger picking but they are not necessary for picking. I was just making a comment. I finger pick like a quarter of the time anyway. I also thought he was a really good guitarist.

Sorry about offending everyone!

^^^ I wasn't offended, actually laughed when I read it. They (JB's nails) ARE really long and nasty looking, but they get the job done. I'd have mine grown long too if I didn't have a regular job that requires me to use my hands for something other than playing the guitar all day long. I wonder if he can type?

Forget typing; I doubt the girls like it. I have to keep my nails short in case my hands wander to the nether-regions during a passionate frenzy. No matter how good your guitar playing is, girls hate it when you have long nails and scratch their yoo-hoo.
Sincerely, Chad.
