It saves space on the guitar. You can use it for a tone/volume control, and use it as a switch for something esle.

and sometimes coil splitting, similiar to the rocker switches on my ibanez jet king, just less space on the face of the guitar taken up

versatility and cleanliness

not to mention adding something like an emg afterburner is much easier as a push pot than having to drill a new hole
