I've been working with this for a while now, and I can't quite work it out.

What exactly is a tritone? How do I use it? What notes in what scales are tritones?

Cheers.
The UG Awards exist only to instill me with existential doubt.

For me, the 60's ended that day in 1978...

A tritone is half an octave. It's often used for an accidental, especially in metal music, because of it's really sinister sound.

Just half an octave? Just 6 notes?

I've spent all night not understanding a word of the several paragraphs in wikipedia for 'half an octave'.

What a world we live in, eh?

Cheers.

its the interval of an augmented 4th.... or diminished 5th.

It was once considered "the devils" interval.

on the guitar the shape looks like this: tritone
shred is gaudy music

Well, it's not really 6 notes. It's a note, that is located half way between octaves. The tritone to E is Bb, C is F#, etc.

A tone is a step, right? So 'tri-' means three and 'tone' is equivalent to a step, so three steps.

So what? I wasted like 5 minutes watching DaddyTwoFoot's avatar.

Metalheads are the worst thing that ever happened to metal.

As to what scale degrees are tritones:
Major scale: 4th and 7th.
Minor scale: 2nd and 6th.
Harmonic minor scale: Same as above, plus 4th and 7th.
Melodic minor(ascending): 3rd and 6th, 4th and 7th.

its commonly found in your normal V7 chord, like in C major, its found in a G7 chord, because it's the interval between the b7 of a 7th chord, and the 3 of the chord, ie, the distance between B(the third of G), and A(the b7 of G), is a tritone

isnt that called the devils interval
Soon you will sit on the bench
of those who deny I have my soul
You sell a dream you create
Condemned by what you condemned before
Smooth are the words you sing down and high
