I have been looking around and I haven't been able to find a thread that indexes band tempo's.

So my idea is that in this thread a list will be created based on the genre's: thrash metal, death metal, black metal, doom metal, NWBOHM, power metal and progressive metal.

This will just work as a reference so that someone can look at the thread and be immediately exposed to a band's most extreme instances (in terms of speed.)

Rules

Bands only have their fastest and slowest tempos listed

The song names must be listed

The tempo does not have to last the entire song, it can be any section from a song.

All of the songs listed must be recorded works, no live stuff.

If the song has blast beats then for the purpose of this thread they can be assumed to be eight-note blasts (two per beat)

All other tempo's are to be based on the Main pulse of the selected part.
ie in a standard 4/4 bar the stressed 1234.

If a section is in double time it will be stated.

If you notice that a song does not have the fastest or slowest examples for a band, let me know.

And after about every week or two i will update this thread to include a list.

I can see this thread going downhill with lots of note value arguments..
Quote by Ultraussie
I want to try that while playing the opening riff to "Tempting Time".

0-0-0-13-0-0-0-0-13 or something like that alalalala but It;s so heavy and off time and awesome and you could not f**k anyone to it.

damn I should finish writing and then record my song Murder (The Evil In Sadness) I could be the first melodeath band on the list with 16ths at 270bpm (quaters otherwise known as 4/4 time) XDDDDDDDDDDDDD

Phobophile really has a section at 300? wow I need to pay attention to my tab...
Wait... I dont... remember even having a complete one...............
#6
cannibal corpse 260 bpm on frantic disembowelment. Some 16th notes in there...
#8
yeah, i was told phobophile was that fast in another thread, but i checked a tab for it and no, so i have changed it ot the next fastest one i know.
#9
Slayer Angel of Death 220BPM

Slowest....210?

This thread is so redundant.
Note values take a large part in this thread.
Master of Puppets for example might just be 110bpm with all the note values halved.
#12
But the beat that the drums are playing,
with 8th notes on the cymbal, and accents on every kick and snare.
The pulse of the song is 220.
So therefore it is 220.

I stated that in the rules of the thread.

I am also basing alot of the tempo's off of tabs. Check them out.
#13
I think Weakness is probly slower than Face of Melinda. I dunno the tempo, but it sounds a lot slower.

At 110bpm those 8th notes on the cymbal become 16th notes.....
The bar would have twice as many "notes" but it would still sound like 110bpm.
And don't even tell me to go look at tabs...
#15
yeah, but the actual pulse presented within the drum acentuates the stresses on the kick and snare drums, which causes the pulse (the beat) of the song to be interpreted by the listener as 220BPM,
Because that is the actual feel of that part, and it is not in double time (which is what you are describing) as the accent is strongly on the kick and snare, so that is the tempo for that section of the song.
#17
k, whatever.
I opened it because i was interested, and it seems other people are too, so I personally see the point of it, even if you cannot.
#18
im not sure what the bpm is but slayers slowest song would be 213. Cannibal Corpses would be Festering in the Crypt. I dont feel like getting every little piece of info so thatll have to do

[last edit] i realize it kinda did not go anywhere (this post) ish... but hopefully you'll all get the jist of what i was trying to say, atm im now too lazy to explain it and think it through , in the end im saying faster tempos usually look better in the sheet and make it easier to read the rhythm given that 32nd notes usually blend in with the staff as do 16ths so overcrowding the staff with those = ew- but yeah its probably better to cut it in half if say theres' only 2-5 notes per measure and the tempos high as hell...

hm I think a tempo *most often* would have to be left at a nice setting of mostly
16ths - wholes

and hence these tempos come forth

ill use my riff at 270 bpm for this example

simple shiz,

1:------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2:------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3:------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4:---------8-----------8------------7-----------7-------------10-------------10----------8------------7
5:--88555----88555---- 77444----77444----1010777----1010777----88555----77444
6:------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

the single notes are 16th notes , the chords are quarters, the tempo's 270, 4/4 time

in metal imo 180 bpm would be more appropiate while in setting with 16ths-wholes, with hardly any use of 32nd notes... as is that riff up there, it could be made into 135 bpm and halving the note values from 16ths and quarters to 32nds and 8ths... but it just seems kinda incorrect while most of the song is in 185 bpm.... though lmao its a bigger leap from 185 to 270 than 185 to 135 but the speed is still the same i guess -.-................... -in appearance/sound-

[edit 2] okay well code seemed to make it even worse and pretty much pointless and gay for the tab part so without code it looks considerably mother****ing better -.-
imma try to fix it so it looks acceptable *smashes babie against brickwall*

I'm yet to envision a situation where this stuff will come in handy.

"Dude, Slayer's new song is like, so fast, like a thousand beats per minute!"
"WRONG! IT IS ACTUALLY....*click click click*....254 BPM."
"Wow, thanks dude. Dunno how I'd live without you"
"Don't thank me, thank the extreme metal tempo thread"

Anyway, I'm over it.
The mods can decide its fate no doubt.

This thread is pretty fail. But cryptopsy's fastest is in adeste infidelis where it hits 292. And slayers fastest is 240. Nathrakh would be a good one for a speed test, im guessing the would be around 300 at least on some songs.

just makes for good convo and some of us like to discuss tempo -aka myself and liking to be like "OMG SO I HAVE A 270 BPM RIFF LULZ" "ORLY" "RLY" "SCHWEET" "YER" "TAB?" "YER, I CULD PLY IT TOO ON GITAR ON THE MIC" "LULZ BAD ASS" "YER!" *plays*"

The Fastest Guitarists thread is pointless too, and they have that one stickied.

Don't Dark Angel hit 284 bpm on The Burning of Sodom?

is it the classic power chord + string open 6th string 16th notes? lol thats what I noticed Darkness Descends was mostly about........

The song Chimera? or the song "*****" from the album, because the song Chimera, is actually quite slow, but the first song is really quite fast.

Also just learned that Deliverence (so far) takes the cake for Opeth's fastest song at 197.

Maybe.

But still, they are under progressive metal in the metal recommdenation thread.

I didn't come here to argue, so anyways: Deliverance by Opeth is 197 bpm.
