i got myself a laptop today, i tried to connect to internet wireless, although i knew i didn't have it connected. , two wireless connections to choose from ! I chose one, and now i have internet ! i'm using someone else's IP adress now i guess...

i have a few questions about this:
- if i connect and disconnect to the wireless connections of someone else, and they're on the computer while i'm doing it, do they get some kind of notice on their screen like 'wireless internet is now connected' or something everytime i dsconnect or connect to their internet ?

- since i'm using their IP, does that mean they get to see on their PC what i typed in on google or on here for example ?

any comments or anything maybe ?

I don't think it means you share the same IP address with them. My house has 4 computers and we all share one network and I can't see what my dad is doing on my computer, so it's cool. Some noob quite obviously forgot to put a password on the network!

Download child porn, then look in the papers/news websites tomorrow for a convicted child porn downloader in your area, and there you have it.

Can't you just have a look in your settings? It can't be too hard. Or go on the program and look in help.

ts and andyscot, where do you guys live?
2 ducks and a rabbi walk into a bar.
The rabbi enjoys a nice drink and the ducks are shooed out so that health services aren't called in.
The day proceeds as normal.

No... 0_o

They're still different computers dude. He can't see anything you're doing, he will just know that another computer is connected to his network and that's only if he actually loads up the program to have a look. He won't get a notification about it

You should still get your own internet though =/

there's loads of programs people can use to view who's on their internet network and what they're doing, they can even get into your computer, put in viruses, delete files etc.

why get your own internet access if you can use someone else's network?

it's free, unregulated, and not illegal.
and it's not like you're hurting anything.

It's possible to check if someone else is connected to your network but most people don't know how/never bother checking after they first set it up.

If he figures is out he can put up a password, but without some pretty sophisticated equipment he'll never know where the connection was coming from.

That depends on what sort of plan he's on.
If he's got a download limit then yes, you are hurting someone.

Well, you always have the option of not paying and thus having no internet. How do you fancy that?

I password secure our wireless network but we have like 5 houses around here with unlocked internet so we use those when ours goes down...

yea you are getting free internet from that wireless source and I think you are sharing their IP but it's my understanding that your IP comes from each computer...not the wireless source...

anyways you wont get a message at the other computer, it just doesnt do that.
I suggest just setting your your wireless and paying for it like everyone else does.
