Has anyone in here ever been in/ had experiences with a fraternity?

my preinitiation week is coming up.
#2
My English teacher told me for initiation he had to eat something that had a string tied on it, and then they had to pull it back up.

Have fun with it.

BEYOND OVERDO-EDIT: I remember posting this now that I see it. It was a clam.

just dont drink yourself to death or get buttraped.
a guy from the local college died of alcohol poisoning during an initiation. you definitely wanna make sure that if you drink, you're around people who know how to act in those situations.

my fraternity is very much anti hazing, im not really too nervous about that, because ive been with them for about 3 months

fraternities are for people that like other men to play with their balls. be a man, be yourself, be ANON......

My brother joined one and his initiation was brutal. He came home for a week when his thighs were purple and bleeding [paddling]. And for some reason, he brought canned corned beef and I'm pretty sure he had to eat it raw. And I overheard of an ugly little deed he had to do. It was horrible.

you just have to find the right one. if the campus is big enough, there'll be a fraternity without douchebags, because they don't like douchebags, so they attract other non-douchebags. joined one without douchebags, because i like to think that i'm not one. stereotypes aside from other people about fraternities.

I joined Alpha Tau Omega, Gamma Omicron Chapter (Purdue University). A lot of other ATO chapters are douchebags but this one is awesome.
AT PURDUE!!! ( I think i'm the only one at Purdue that is on the forums....)

Awesome bands YOU! need to check out: Pain of Salvation, Vision Divine, Angra, Ayreon

Doesn't everyone do this anyway? In sandwiches?

Frats = paying for friends.

For girls it's like "here's Barbie...you're fat!"

Pff every1 has the stereotypical image of some D**khole with a backwards hat on and possibly shorts drinking and slapping his friends asses? Frats are sweet watch animal house.

Not with the corned beef in where I come from. It's nasty.

Don't forget the pastel shirts with popped collars, and oversized tennishoes...brah.

Frats are as diverse as any other type of clique. Some people do it for fun, some do it for prestige, some do it because they like to be told what to do and someone tells them to joing a frat. Make sure the frat your joining lines up with your reason for joining.

Ups and downs: sure you have to pay money for your greek friends, but the greeks get shown a hell of a lot of favoritism over other residents when it comes to campus resources (at least at any colleges I've attended or visited).

In my experience, most of the social frats like to haze; so good luck at your initiation, lol. It has been pretty calm around here lately; but due in large part to past troubles, most of our social frats are about to get booted out of their houses cause ASU wants their land, lol...

But I joined a professional fraternity. We do social things as well... but we also emphasize professionalism. But at our initiation, we simply initiate new members and have a big dinner and party afterwards. There is another event we do, however, where pledges undergo a series of 'activities'.

hey, im in a fraternity!(if you cant tell by my avatar). Anywho, it really does depend on your school and on the fraternities available. At my school there are complete douchebag fraternities, then there are more sensible ones. We're not the big party fraternity, not the biggest house. I joined because I really enjoyed hanging out with the guys. I'm very anti-hazing, and there was none for our house. I know for a fact that it does go on, but its not all fraternities. To all the people who say that you are paying for friends, thats just stupid.
Basically to sum it up, some frats are typical douchebaggish frats, but you're going to find douchebags anywhere. Don't join those, but don't fall into the stereotype that all are like that, you'll miss out on some cool people that way.

I never got this whole thing in America, we just we given random accomodation in the first year and then got with a group of friends to get a house off campus in the subsequent years. Fraternities seem like such a waste of time to me.

The point is networking, either your brothers will help you get a job, help you get laid, or play Halo with you, depending on the type of frat you choose. None of which is worth paying for if you ask me, (and the former two won't happen with most frats anyway ) there are alternatives to finding a nice community of friends in college.

As a student, I chose to live in the honors dorm--first, each floor was coed unlike every other building on the campus so the testosterone overflow wasn't unbearable, second, we beat the greeks at many events and competitions (everyone likes to win) third, they paid me a lot of money instead of vice versa. Sure, a few students were nerdy enough to be a drag, but I'm pretty sure you're going to run into a few students douchey enough to suck in any frat you join too. Overall, I'm completely convinced that my communal living experience was a lot better than that of my friends living over in the frat houses.

Frat bros and sorority girls are two of the very few groups of people I tend to think less of upon learning they are in a frat or sorority, especially social frats.
#37
Yeah, i'm in the shamma lamma ding dong fraternity; lots of others around here suck, but this one's really laid back.

Yes, we all know a group of fratbois are responsible.

Frats are pretty gay if you ask me.

A bunch of guys doing paddling and homoerotic, ritualistic things in the dark.

It's like a Priest concert without the good tunes.

Most fraternities have guys that do similar things - my cousin's fraternity is full of lacrosse and rugby players. And they're all pretty good guys. So find a frat house that is into the same things you're into and is full of people you like. Fraternities can be stereotyped just like anything else; don't rule out joining one because of the stereotype.
Life is underrated.
