For The Love of God - Steve Vai
In The Name of God - Dream Theater

Because shredding can have soul too. Melody > Speed, though.

Hmm...seems that God has a lot to do with shredding.

Look at Paul Gilbert's Racer X stuff an his 80's live solos.

Learn those and you'll be set.
You've read it, you can't un-read it!

Dragonforce solo's i assure you, they are the hardest most challanging solo's...in the universe..i'm a 100% sure of it.
#9
if you want insane speed, i would find some Rusty Cooley, and if you want some melody, try some Jason Becker(his stuff is still frickin fast).

Which means if he gets them down then a) he'll win the contest and b) he'll be better than dragonforce

This I got to hear. Do you have any sound bites we can take a listen to. If you know all of Steve Vai I wouldn't be entering a contest I'd be making a living playing out.

go for racer x imo, something like scarified will help you win.

i wouldn't attempt to learn MAB, rusty cooley, shawn lane or something similar because i feel they're focusing on hitting the highest speed possible. also, it's impossible to replicate some of the stuff they come up with

How about Apache? You could use it like a sort of template, and add loads of little shredding licks into it yourself.
#28
groove or die-andy timmons

it's just come up on shuffle and it'd be perfect.

+1 on Guthrie Govan
Guthrie Govan has some insane songs wich are both melodic and fast!
3 good songs are Fives, Sevens and Rhode Island Shred!
all incredible songs
or else i would recommend some of Paul Gilbert's stuff.
But if you want to go all out shred madness you could either do Rusty Cooley - Under The Influnce
or the thing Jeff Loomis played at NAMM 2008 Link at the Video

Don't you think it's a little overkill playing a 14 minute song?

Arpeggio's from hell - YJM just prove to him you can play fast and be an egotystical jackass when you win!!!
#34
I dunno if you consider this shred, but for everyone I've played it, Jason Beckers "Air" is very impressive. It kinda lets you steer away from the you know distorted arpeggios/scales,ect, since its more classical-guitarish. I guess it'll give you an upper hand on style and breadth of scope.

No. Shred had always been won on notes by volume.

Plus, its got godlike sweeping. The TS could take his favourite parts from it, and play them.

OR why not do a medley?

i don't know if this would satisfy you "shred" urge

but you should try learning "mea culpa" by the human abstract. there are a few nice shreds in there.
