I just got into a new band and the other guitarist uses a Valveking 112. So, I've decided to upgrade my rig. What amp should I get to be able to hear myself? The next three songs we are going to work on are For Whom The Bell Tolls (Metallica), Hotel California (Eagles), and Fear of the Dark (Iron Maiden), to give a perspective of our sound.

**The amp I'm looking for will definitely be an all-tube combo**

Yeh the SICK! bit sounds a bit stupid.

Budget? Peavey Classics are basically a souped up VK IMO.
It'll get a good iron maiden tone, but you may need a metal muff or a high output pickup/overdrive combo for metallica.

The voicing is completely different, the cleans aren't as modern and it's covered by tweed. Lol

But the overdriven tones have alot of iron maiden-ness to it.
And, it'd be able to cover Eagles better than a VK.
Well, I was just throwing something in there, plus I didn't know TS's budget.

I don't really want to get the same amp as the other guitarist...

It's 100 bucks over your budget, but the Randall RG50TC is worth looking into.
It's a definite modern amp, and it could do maiden and metallica very well, but i'm not sure how it'd do for eagles stuff because it's lower gain tones really weren't too hot.

What about:
B-52 AT-112
Laney LC15 (Although I don't know if 15 watts, even all tube will cut through)
Vox Custom Classic AC15CC1 (Cutting through? Even distortion for Maiden with pedals?)
Traynor Custom Valve 20WR (Heard a sound clip, liked it)
Peavey Classic (Played it, loved it. A little over budget though)

+1 to Traynor YCV series. Look used. Maybe look for a JCM combo too. I got my 4501 for about $525 used.

What about:
B-52 AT-112~That'll work fine. It's actually pretty good.
Laney LC15~Never used one
Vox Custom Classic AC15CC1~Eh... Probably not.
Traynor Custom Valve 20WR~May work. May not be high enough gain for metallica.
Peavey Classic~I recommended this in the first place and I still kind of recommend it. It has awesome cleans, and can get great iron maiden tones. Just slap a Metal Muff or have high output pickups and a tubescreamer for metallica.

IMO the Marshall DSL 401 sounds better and less harsh than the valveking. If on a budget the VOX ADVT50 is a GREAT BUY especially for the money. If $ not a problem, I would go with a DSL100. I realize amps seem to be a touchy subject on UG, so understand that this is MY opinion after actually hearing and playing the amps listed.

Whatever you end up getting, you should not have much problem "besting" you guitar partner.

Oh, some amps of interest that I can not acurately comment on would be a Laney for $ or less $ Traynor. I have heard good things from friends about these amp manuafacturers. I have also heard only clips and such and they sound pretty darn good!

Peace
