I never found out why isn't it just like the other strings? I heard Van Halen said something about the guitar being one of the worst set up instruments out there.

so that chords are easier to play. Simple

Needs a comment about a low b too

What?

Do you mean how it aligns itself with the E string on the 4th fret? That's because chord structure and scales would be messed up if it was a C.

No I meant how like when one tunes the strings you can use the 5th fret technique and then when you get to the G string you have to use the 4th fret to tune the B string to.

thats what he said, if it was a C, the tuning would mess up, you wouldn't have two E strings, and scales and chords wouldn't work the way they do.
If you wanna tune it different, go ahead...we ain't gonna stop ya, but the Guitar Police might...

yeah that'll just be there to make chords easier to play, doesn't mean you have to tune it that way though, you could tune the B to a C and the E to an F which would make it easier to play in certain keys as long as you weren't playing chords.

it allows for extended quatrads and triads with all six strings to be played with four fingers. van halen is mistaken in calling it stupid- it is brilliant.

As said above allows for easiest use of variety of chords and such.

Also B is easiere to remember than Bb/A*

no one really knows why the guitar in general is EADGBE must have been the easiest way guys like Bach got to play their lutes easily. Weird thing is the flamenco guitar came over with the same tuning..must be some connection there.

EVH was complaining about the fact that it's never quite in tune. He's taking about the intonation. He endorses the Buzz Feiten system these days (It seems - not sure though), because it remedies this problem.

Thank you.

Now that this is replied, the only thing I recall Van Halen saying anything about the matter was that some instruments might not have perfect intonation, and he tuned his B string flat (or sharp, I can't remember) to make sure the 12nd fret area sound in tune.
