We have a student teacher in English, so our class has sort of been a guinea (sp?) pig test for new methods for her to teach.

Today, on the chalk board were 4 spread out pieces of paper that read:

"Agree"

"Somewhat Agree"

"Somewhat Disagree"

"Disagree"

On a paper we were handed, there was a list of subjects. She would read the sentence, and we would stand under the paper that went with our decision. One of them read:

"Cloning is morally okay".

2 people were on "somewhat agree", the rest of the class were on either "Somewhat Disagree" or "Disagree". I was the ONLY one on the "Agree" side.

So I was surprised that so many people disagree with cloning. When asked why, two people said responses like:

"It's a sin to clone", and "Only God can create Life".

I said that although I believe in God, I don't think I should show that bias when considering the subject. I didn't say this, but it's wrong just to say that cloning is wrong because God says so (even though he doesn't say so directly, and I don't know if he does indirectly), without any understanding or explanation of the reasoning behind the decision.

So, I was wondering what you guys think. Cloning; Morally okay?

Cloning is brilliant, we could clone new cells for patients, we could make whole people for amusement purposes as well.

Cloning and stem cell research hold the key to the next step of human evolution. I am absolutely behind both and nothing winds me up more than the god squad saying that its against his will.

I somewhat agree in the interest of science, however I have a feeling that the first human clone will end up a bit like Frankenstein.

Think about it, with cloning, we could get rid of cancer...

I read it in a book, so it's gonna be true!

Cloning is awesome.

Once its perfected, it ll help get rid of organ donor lists because we could just grow our own organs without the need for immunorepressant drugs because we would have a 100% perfect tissue match. Its awesome!

i dont agree with being able to determine the sex or eye colour or any thing associated with designer babies, they should not be given genes to make them good sportsmen or singers etc. its what make us unique and if that is taken away then well all be come the perect race which would be no fun

I don't really think it's immoral but it's kinda pointless.

That is one VERY ignorant comment. Cloning can be used to create new organs, grow new cells, grow new strands of DNA. With cloning, we could cure what are currently incurable diseases. Hell, with cloning, people could be able to choose what they want to look like!

dont you find that wrong though?

part of being human is being unique and different in each of us. its how we have survived through evolution.

It is pointless.
You see. michal23.
Everybody eventually dies.

Just because something is replicated does not mean it has the same mind, emotions or thoughts. You will die and that is that. New organs? For what? You'll still die later down the road.

Always look on the bright side of life.

but say you had kidney failiure
instead of spending the rest of your life hooked up to a dialysis machine you could get a new one
it would seriously improve the quality of your life

Funny actually! I had kidney failure in Kindergarden. Obviously I survived
Of course I need to take fish oil everyday, and my health is quite fine.

Rather than spending so much money on cloning. Just legalize the market for organs.

Any thoughts? Do tell.

I think its okay to clone like body parts or whatever, like a heart, but If we get to the point where we can clone a living human, I think that would just be wrong.

Agreed. I think its great that we will be able to eventually save lives with this technology, but I don't agree with being able to choose all the features of a baby, it takes away what makes us unique.

Sure it seems wrong, but think of the results!! Human cloning is the only way to obtain a truly flawless utopia, imagine a society without disease, a society without prejudice or fighting or violence or crime, without war, a society in synch with the natural world, cloning has the potential to create the perfect race, a true paradise on earth. But it would require that every single person get behind the program, and accept that a cloned worldwide population is whats best for this planet, and our own race, we'd need to let the scientists do their thing, find the perfect template for mankind, and create it on mass. If i knew that was in our future, i would die happy.

And live the rest of it in severe debt? Do you realize that organs will still be extremely expensive wether there is a supply of them or not.

Ahhhh, well that's where more research comes in to it. Tell me, do you think electricity started so affordable that it was immediately seen as a standard, rather than a luxury?

Only God can create life? Obviously not, if we can clone...

But seriously, I think it's morally fine.

They probably mean that only god is supposed to create life.

Not that that makes it any less retarded, but you know.

but would it be?
perfect humans is an interesting concept because what would you call a perfect human?
but at the start of time when the first humans came here, werent they free from hate disease and predjudice? these things will develop again and a perfect society can never be created.

also we wouldnt be unique
and that is what makes humanity and every other species alive. this gives the abillity to adapt and change to the enviroment, we cant be the strongest of the species if were all the same because eventually we will be affected by a disease that we wont be able to adapt to counter and because we are all the same we would die out.

Yes, there is the concept of supply and demand. Obviously when the supply of a product is increased, its price will decrease. Same concept with demand. As demand increases, so will the price.

Huge Supply of organs everybody! Hooray! The demand for them is exceedlingly higher! And even if thats not the case. The hospitals / governments that are in control of these organs will still charge a fine price for them. That's why I believe there should be a free market on them (with the obvious monitoring of the gov't to inspect healthy organs).

Yes you CAN put a price on life.
It's called surgery / medicine / therapy.

and oh, how pricey it is.. :P

Economics 101. Love it!
