Can anyone tell me a good setting for a hard rock type distortion a la Disturbed and Three Days Grace out of a DS-1 pedal?

Distortion all the way up, level a little past 5 (middle of the dial), and your tone just before 5.
It's a process, not an event.

That probably won't get you Three Days Grace or Disturbed unless you have the same type of guitar or amp or whatever, but it's the closest you'll come I think.

For a more metal tone, you could try a MD-2.

I generally turn the distortion all the way up and put the tone at about 11 o'clock when I'm using it for heavier stuff. If you really want their tone I'd suggest getting a distortion pedal more suited for that style of music. I know DigiTech (I think it's them) has a Dan Donegan signature metal distortion pedal. In my rig I use a DS-1 (with those settings) or my Russian Big Muff (with similar settings) in combination with my Ibanez TS808 Tube Screamer to get a heavier distortion. I hope that helps you out some!
