Check if there's something else sucking up your RAM.

check nothing is eating up your RAM, don't run it in windowed mode

dell...

your point?

Like it or not dell do make good computers, naturally you can build better ones yourself for less and they do sell glorified word processors but they are good systems if you know what you want but don't want to build it yourself.

I would disable Vista's Aero theme while playing games if I were you. Right click on the desktop and go to Personalize Settings or Properties - can't remember which (I'm not at home right now) and then in the new window, chose the change theme option or something and then choose Windows Basic.

Although this could only be part of the problem, resoloution being another factor. When I disabled Aero on my laptop with 2GB of RAM, Vista only used 800-900MB of RAM as apposed to 1.2-1.3GB with Aero enabled.

Vista sucks up about 600-700 mb of RAM but even when call of duty is running the ram usagae is not more than like 1.6 or so Gb...

And it only happens sometimes....so frustrating !!!

I had a laptop with a 8600GT and Vista and similar problems. Do have SP1 for Vista installed yet? How about updating your graphics and mainboard drivers?
If you did all of that and it didn't help, I recommend going back to XP. It helped my laptop.

Contrary to popular belief, vista doesn't "suck up" any ram. It just puts them into a program so whenver the program needs ram, it can quickly disperse it but it looks like the program is draining alot of ram for nothing.

With those specs you should be able to run CoD4. Maybe your system is bottlenecked by something, maybe you've set your graphics waaay too high. Maybe your drivers aren't updated.

Ya but i keep seeing on all the forums people maxing out cod 4 and it still giving them good frame rates...

Set it on high and still getting like 10 fps...

Is it just me or what....

And btw cod 2 maxed out works like a charm.....

And the low fps only happens on certain levels....And im sure its not cause of more baddies cause on levels with a lot more baddies it runs fine...

Got the 174 nvidia drivers....

And sorry for being a noob but how do i check if service pack 1 is installed ??

Could be one setting that's making it all go slow. It was for me.

I could run everything on max, except for one little thing - can't remember which - which dragged the framrate down to snaillike speeds.

Try locating that setting.

I don't know why people complain about vista sucking up RAM, unless you have DDR3 (and you'd know about it if you did) RAM is dirt cheap and is well worth just buying some more
