Hi there

I am looking for any tips on achieving John Frusciante’s style for any Chili Peppers song. I have the following set up…

Fender Stratocaster American Deluxe

into

Boss Chromatic Tuner TU2
Boss DS-S Turbo Distortion
Electro-Harmonix Big Muff Pi
Mxr phase
Jim Dunlop fuzz wah
Boss Super Chorus CH1
Boss Equalizer GE7

into

Fender Hot Rod Deville 410

Does anyone have any ideas for an overall tone setting of the Deville Amp? Is it worth using the distortion of the amp or depending on the pedals entirely? Also, I have a Boss Compressor CS3. I was thinking about running this at the end of the chain to ensure the dynamics are controlled when changing from clean to distorted sounds. I’m thinking about running this through the effects return as opposed to the pedals, through which the signal will travel and then to the amp.

Thanks for your help

These are John's settings:

That's the base for Your settings because everything depends on what amp You have. So You can change them for what sounds good on Your amp but think about these as a base.
You have a good pedals for RHCP. Here are some settings for solos and rythms:
Big Muff:
Volume - whatever You like
Tone - 11 o'clock
Sustain - half past three

DS-2:
Level - whatever
Tone - about 4 o'clock
Dist - about 3 o'clock
Turbo mode

For the rest of Your pedals You have to make Your own settings because I don't own any other pedals which You have... and John doesn't have them either so who knows what sounds good. if You have a problem, ask dude!

Brian May used Vox only because Rory Gallagher used them, and he has his own sound. He just wants to play some RHCP stuff with a similar sound to Johns.

I wanna have a similiar tone that John uses too, but I'm afraid of buying a DS-2 distortion pedal. Will it destroy my sound as much as people say it will, or is it just bull****?

^ I think it's just bull****. DS-2 is a great pedal and... John has it so it can't destroy Your sound. if John's DS-2 didn't destryed his, then You're safe...

True, true
One thing I've noticed is that he always uses overdrive when he plays live, even on those songs that he plays clean on studio version. So I guess he uses his "natural" overdrive from the amp, and then turns on the DS-2 for that extra push.

it's good to see you answering peoples questions but like questions from 8 months ago i think they deserve to not be answered for numerous reasons mainly because the question could of been answered by then with the user searching on other threads. aka don't revive dead threads.

Cheers, whats going on with his Inputs? I don't get why there is a patch cable.

Its a 2 channel amp (clean/od) but you have to physically move the plug if you're gonna switch between them. By plugging the guitar into the 1st channel then patching the 1st to the 2nd you get the sounds of both at the same time. A lot of older amps have this and you can get some pretty cool tones from it.
