a 2.0 L container of nitrogen has a pressure of 3.2 atm. What volume would be necessary to decrease the pressure to 1 atm?

Yall like cup noodles?
Surely it's a simple common sense/maths question. Should be 0.625 litres.

Well, you've got 3.2 atmospheres of pressure, so in order to turn that into 1 atmosphere you've got to divide the pressure by 3.2 This would mean multiplying the volume by 3.2, so you take the volume you've got (2.0 L) and multiply it by 3.2 to get 6.4 litres.

EDIT: ^ Dude above me, you've got it completely wrong, I really don't know how you got that answer, but I'm almost certain my method is correct. If you want to decrease the pressure inside a container you need to increase the volume of the container, so the answer can not be lower than 2 litres.

EDIT2: Yeah, considering the answers below, 6.4 is definitely right.

umm...im kinda guessing here but from my Physics Alevel

Pv=nRT, now in this nRt will be constant, so ill relabel to X

Pv=X, from the initial info we can see that X= 6.4

Now we want P=1

so1 x v=X

6.4L?

There are lots of variables in this, for example temperature. What level of difficulty is this question?

That'll affect what answer you need.

^ That guy divided by 3.2 but i'm pretty sure 6.4 is correct

Just assume they're constant, thats what i did. Im guessing the guys at like AS/A2 level so i dont think it'll be in too much detail.
My mom taught chemistry for hundreds (slight exaggeration) of years, and she also says 6.4
willing to admit when I'm wrong. thank **** for A-levels where one can drop subjects one is incompetent at.

Yeah, I was assuming that too, just wanted to point that out. Good job.
how about letting some of the nitrogen out of the container.?

Pressure is directly proportional to volume. PV = k

(2.0L)(3.2atm) = 6.4Latm

xL(1atm) = 6.4Latm
6.4L

i think that you may need to use Volume at STP which is 22.4

Pressure is inversly proportional to the volume.
