Basic Techniques

1. Palm Muting

It is pretty easy. It is based on the picking hand. The only thing you have to do is to
Put your picking hand’s side at the bottom of the strings right near the bridge. You will
hear a short stubby sound. Note: you must not mute it completely.
To know when to play with palm muting you’ll see this signature “P.M”.

Riff 1
e|---1-2-3-4-3-2-1------------------------------------------------|
B|------------------------1-2-3-4-3-2-1---------------------------|
G|----------------------------------------------1-2-3-4-3-2-1-----|
D|----------------------------------------------------------------|
A|----------------------------------------------------------------|
E|----------------------------------------------------------------|
P.M . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Note: Chords can be palm muted too.

Some songs with palm mutings... Led Zeppelin - Whole Lotta Love; Comunication breakedown...

2. Muting

It is pretty easy too. Just put your fretting finger on the string and pick.
You will get a muted short sound. Note: you must mute it completely.
To know when to mute string you’ll see this signature “X”.
also if you put your left hand some harmonic palce like 12th fret or 9th than put all your fingers on that string to mute the natural harmonics as well

Riff 2
e|---1-X-3-X-3-X-1------------------------------------------------|
B|------------------------1-X-3-X-3-X-1---------------------------|
G|----------------------------------------------1-X-3-X-3-X-1-----|
D|----------------------------------------------------------------|
A|----------------------------------------------------------------|
E|----------------------------------------------------------------|

Note: Chords can be muted too.

Mutings are awesome when strumming and with wah... to get some wacka wacka sound

3. Bend/Release/Vibrato

a. Bend

Now this is a little bit harder. It sounds like slide.
All you need to do is to pull up or down the string you’re playing on after you pick it.
There are half-step bends and full-step bends
To know when to bend the string you’ll see this signature “b”.

Riff 3

Riff 3
e|---1b2-3b4-3-2-1------------------------------------------------| In this case you play first fret after you
B|------------------------1b3-2b4-3-2-1---------------------------| pull the string up so you can here the second
G|----------------------------------------------1b2-3b4-3-2-1-----| frets sound.
D|----------------------------------------------------------------| Than do the same with the third fret.
A|----------------------------------------------------------------|
E|----------------------------------------------------------------|

Note: there is no matter between pulling up or down. Just look which way is more comfortable for you.

b. Release

This is much easier. You just release the bended string.
This time you’ll see this signature “r”.

Riff 4
e|---1b2-3b4r3-2r1------------------------------------------------|
B|------------------------1b3r2b4r1---------------------------|
G|----------------------------------------------1b2-3b4r3-2r1-----|
D|----------------------------------------------------------------|
A|----------------------------------------------------------------|
E|----------------------------------------------------------------|

c. Vibrato

This is something like bending and releasing few times. You just do it very fast.
This time you’ll see this signature “~”.

Riff 5
e|---1~-2~-3~-4~-3~-2~-1~~~-------------------------------------------------| Just vibrato after each note
B|---------------------------1~-2~-3~-4~-3~-2~-1~~~-------------------------|
G|--------------------------------------------------------------------------|
D|---------------------------------------------------1~-2~-3~-4~-3~-2~-1~~~-|
A|--------------------------------------------------------------------------|
E|--------------------------------------------------------------------------|

Hybrid Techniques: Part 2: advanced and intermediate techniques:

Sweep-tapping

This is a commonly-used technique which spices up regular sweeped arpeggios with tapping, almost always on the highest string.
The biggest technical advantage of this technique is to "extend" the arpeggio with the extra tapped note(s). Obviously,
the tap is done with the middle finger, as you will be holding a pick with your index/thumb, unless you are Eddie Van Halen . Here are some examples of Sweep-Tapping:

Simple sweep tapping

Riff 1
T
E|----------------------12--17--20--17--12-------------------|
B|------------------13----------------------13---------------|
G|--------------14------------------------------14-----------|
D|----------14--------------------------------------14-------|
A|--12--15---------------------------------------------15--12|
E|-----------------------------------------------------------|
Played as triplet-eights.

Complex-er sweep tapping

Riff 2

T T
E|----------------------12--17--20--17--12--15--19--|--15--12--------------------|
B|------------------13-----------------------------------------13----------------|
G|--------------14-------------------------------------------------14------------|
D|----------14---------------------------------------------------------14--------|
A|--12--15----------------------------------------------------------------15--12~|
E|-------------------------------------------------------------------------------|
Played as triplet-eights.

Tap slides

An addition to tapping, where the tapping finger first taps a note and then slides up or down to another note without letting go,
and possibly back to the original note.
CAUTION: Super hard to do without high-gain.

Here's an example which mixes awsome stretches, string skipping, normal tapping and tap-slides:

Riff 3
T T T T
E|------------------------------------------------|--9--12--15--18--15--18--21--18--22-18-21-18-15--|
B|--------------------------tap-slide--------------|------------------------------------------------|
G|--------------9--12--15--18--19--18--15--12--9--|-------------------------------------------------|
D|------------------------------------------------|-------------------------------------------------|
A|--10--13--16------------------------------------|-------------------------------------------------|
E|------------------------------------------------|-------------------------------------------------|
Triplet-eights, Tap-slide the C# and D.

for awesome use of bends (and vibrato) see Marty Friedman, Jason Becker and most blues guitarists. For overenthusiastic bends/vibrato, try Yngwie Malmsteen

For more step bends listen to David Gilmour... A Legendar Bender

Ok this will be written after a while...

and could anybody help me with some advanced techiques?? like 8 fingered tapping and so?? hmm anything cool??

Bending doesn't sound like wah.. you also might want to mention that generally.. you want the bended note to be a half step or full step higher and not a 2-and-a-half-quarter-spastic-Kirk-Hammet-style-bend..

edit: for awesome use of bends (and vibrato) see Marty Friedman, Jason Becker and most blues guitarists. For overenthusiastic bends/vibrato, try Yngwie Malmsteen.

Good idea for a thread!

Only thing, a bend doesnt sound like a slide... It sounds like a bend... Well to me it does anyway.

i already know this but hey, once its improved to the intermediate stuff like sweeping and tapping then really hard stuff like 8 finger tapping, sweep slide tap picking etc, it might be a useful sticky.

EDIT: also, other than tapping everything in the intermediate section is pretty basic imo. gl

Am I missing something with "Tapping/Two Handed Tapping" being in the same skill category as "Playing Standing Up"?

two handed tapping intermediate level? Yeah cause Van Halen is just an intermediate Guitarist . Playing while standing I found that one very amusing.

Yeah, playing while standing shouldn't be a technique.. it's just something you should be able to do equally well to playing while sitting. Pretty basic stuff.

For advanced, you could make like combinations of some of them. You could talk about combinations of sweeping and tapping, tap-slides, and combinations of those. This isn't really a technique, but I guess "finger stretching" or "big stretches" could go under intermediate or advanced. Umm, string skipping, ect.

I can help provide exercises for basically anything. I have a huge list of things I like to play for a warm up and stuff.

Junior's usually at least a little terse, but he knows his stuff. I've always read his posts in a grouchy grandfather voice, a grouchy grandfather with a huge stiffy for alternate picking.
Besides that, he's right this time. As usual.

Similarly, chords are a super advanced technique because Vai uses them.
Someones knowledge of guitar companies spelling determines what amps you can own. Really smart people can own things like Framus because they sound like they might be spelled with a "y" but they aren't.

Any technique is only as hard as you make it.

- playing while swimming.

- getting chicks to like you

- 8 finger tapped whammy bar harmonics

- playing while using ether (unless you've mastered 'getting chicks to like you')

- playing while sitting down

just a few basic techniques i plan to write hundreds of detailed instructional articles about.

id put those in reserved spots for sure, they are really good.

---------12--------------------------------------------------12---------

Lol yea I've tried those, I couldn't get em fast enough though. Probably not enough practice lol.

This thread has a chance of becoming epic, I can feel it.

Does anyone have any advice with the rolling for those G minor arrpeggios? I can cleanly roll the B and G string but the D always rings out, this has got me really frustrated, what should I do to get it cleaner?

It's not a minor or major at this point, the first interval is a minor 3rd, but then theres a major triad after it.. So what is it ?
