My jackass of a history teacher told us that some guys in Switzerland are developing a new internet type of connectivity that uses fiber optics and gets 5000x faster speeds than the current internet connectivity. Can anyone verify this?

Eventually we'll all be using fiber optics to connect, but it just costs too much right now.

Yes, though, you will one day be able to download a full movie in a matter of minutes.

Verizon Fios runs on fiber optics, which is what I'm using now. Isn't incredibly fast.

You actually use fiber optic cables to connect to your router and modem?

Companies use fiber optics, consumers do not.

Yes there are fiber optic connections that are incredibly fast. But it is also very expensive.

FTTH.

Fibre to the home.

goes 100mbps. Costs a ****load.

There's too many things that can go wrong with fiber optics right now. To depend on it for internet use. I'm sure in the near future everyone will use it.

sure fibre optics is fast but the reason you're not noticing incredibly increased speed is because other people need to be using fibre optics to transmit data to you, its like the weak link analogy.

my phone is fiber optic, and the internet would be but they said they to to install fans to cool the lines to stop the fiber optic cables from melting =(

It's not a new internet, it's just a new transmission medium.

BT are thinking of replacing msot of their trunk lines with fibre optic cables, but it's a very expensive venture and I don't think that it's financially beneficial for businesses to invest in just yet.

Fibre optics sends data through pulses of light, thus data travels at the speed of light. You can imagine how fast that is.

Ohhh. Lol. All I know is that the guy who set up our cable said Fios had "advanced fiber optic technology." Way to crush my dreams.
Peace.

i remember watching a show on the science channel and they said they were going to try and send information through laser beams
Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words - "mank" and "ind". What do these words mean ? It's a mystery, and that's why mankind is.

yeah, cept a bunch of corporate fat cats are setting up all kinds of fees and stipulations to determine how much a month you will pay for your usage. meaning the internet will soon be a commodity, not a level playing field for every individual using it.

way to go corporate american. once again you find a way to save the privileges for the rich at the expense of the poor.

Two thirds the speed of light.
-Physics nerd, sorry-

Ah, okay. Two-thirds the SOL then. Still pretty damn fast, either way.

Also, local fibre optic cabling won't improve speeds to a great degree. It's the main trunk lines that need replacing.

i use fiber optics, its slow as **** through my dads modem,
we have a base one that plugs into a powerline,
and a few other ones that recive the connectivity,
and max out on 10 MBPS when i click on the LAN

In my town they are using fiber optics to put people on the internet. It's actually really cheap. Great service i might add.

As stated in the above posts, local fibre optic cabling really has little effect. Besides, small fibre optic cabling isn't as expensive as you think.

You can get FO patch cables for just over £20.

also it needs to be noted that most home computers can't process data that fast, it will be faster than cable lines, but not by a whole lot until computers can run at the same speed.

he makes it sound as if hes on a fibre optic network, not just using one patch cable, which frankly is kinda dumb, your only as fast as your slowest connection, whats one fibre optic cable at the end gonna do?

^ Exactly. Which is exactly why he's noticed no change whatsoever.

They've been working on optical fibres for a while. It will make computers much faster, because all the calculations will be done at lightspeed - with electricity there's resistance. But, I'll end up clogging my PC up with viruses and porn anyway, so it'll be just as slow as my current one.

the computer would have to read and write information at the speed of light as well, which is far off, at least intel is working on a new concept to use multiple processors but no copper connections, just lazers

Fiber optic connections have been used in large scale networks for many years now, and they're finally coming into homes through stuff like Verizon FiOS. And yes, there is an Internet2 in development. EVERY aspect of computers is continually growing.

Some guy in a CS server not too long ago had fiber optics.
His ping was 3.

How could there be an internet2 when the internet isn't an entity but just a connection to another computer. There really is no internet its just connection from one server to another.

well from a media standpoint the web is currently web2.0, which just describes the user awakening, and the vast user sites such as myspace and youtube. that being said., its all just ways to label the system

Actually, it would be 10000x faster and you'd be able to dl entire movies in seconds: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/science/article3689881.ece
