Well my first was Seven Nation Army by The White Stripes.

Go for what you listen to.

Like Green Day? Do Brain Stew.

Like Nine Inch Nails? Do Closer. (Don't listen to the tabs, use a GP version)

Like Metallica? Too damn bad. They don't have anything easy.

The only easy song I know of Metallica's is Enter Sandman, and The Unforgiven.

Those are relatively easy, compared to the rest. And besides, for a beginner that can be pretty overwhelming. I tried to learn SlipKnots Before I forget when I started and it didn't work.

Quite true.

As for our advice seeking friend, I would say to learn some bass parts of any Beatles song.

Links 2 3 4 - Rammstein is fairly easy. Its the same riff repeated over and over. Strict Machine - Goldfrapp is pretty easy, too.

Also try:

Shinedown - Savme Me
Marilyn Manson - Coma White
The Incredible Mouth Band (Look it up on youtube)
