...Unless you have the vinyl of your favourite tracks.

I had this put to me the other night at the pub. In fact, it started a rather heated debate over whether Metallica is better than Megadeath, but seeing as that thread has been done to hell and back over in the metal forums im going to start this instead.

Can you be a 'true' fan of bands that were around when vinyl was the in thing, without actually owning a vinyl record?

And for that matter, can you be a 'true' fan of a band you have only downloaded, free or not, off the net?

I have no opinion on this matter.

Yes, vinyl sounds crap compared to CD and it wears out much quicker. Buying CDs makes me sensible.

I think that if you don't respect the band enough to buy their own albums, then no, you're not really a fan. You just like the music.

Of course I'm a true fan. I just don't have a record player. I have my favourite bands albums, but not on vinyl. It would be redundant and pointless.

if you think being a true fan is being able to afford the album...you are sorely wrong my friend.

dont get me wrong, i buy the albums, i go to gigs...but being able to afford all that only really means you have the money..

and anyway to quickly point out, bands make **** all from album sales...most of the money goes to the fat cat recording labels. Bands make their money through touring and selling merch.
Personally if i was in a band, i wouldn't care if you bought the record or downloaded it, as long as you get into the band and saw us live or bought a shirt or something.

i hate it when people say that.
its been ages since i took commerce class, but we spoke about the percentages that go to the artist. i think it was like 20%, but lets say im wrong and it's 10%

each CD would cost about $20, yeah? so 10% of $20 is $2. lets say the artist sells 100 000 albums. they get $200 000 from that alone. BUT the album also gets noted as one which has sold 100 000 albums and the band attracts more people. the profits from that are more than they would have had if no one bought the album.

i dont care if people download music, but dont kid yourself into thinking that it doesnt matter.

Because I'm not interested in a vinyl when I can get a digital quality CD which is more practical and a hell lot easier to find. Not everyone can find them when there's only a limited about of them in circulation.

People can be fans if they download because they enjoy the music and may not even have access to the CD normally.

You're elitist tool of the worst sort.

Talk to ANYONE who's released an album, spent shit loads of time and money into producing it, and they'd argue very differently.

Do not use that argument ever, ever again until you've done it yourself.

Not all record companies are fat cats either. So many hard working business people in the record business have lost their jobs because of downloading and being too small to survive. Of course, when they fall down, their bands and employees do too.

Download hurts more than you think. Deal with it.

EDIT: Bands get more money with record sales than touring, unless they're very successful. Touring is mostly to get their name out.

Jesus Christ

A fan is defined by how much he appreciates whatever he is a fan of, not how much he spends on related products.

I own three Death in June cds and one Photek cd, but I'm a far bigger Photek fan than I'm a DIJ fan.
According to BS statistics, 92% of teens have moved on to rap. If you're among the 8% who doesn't consider rap to be real music, donate your brains, as you clearly aren't using them.

you have to know the members of the band, some songs, like them pretty much
then you are a fan

You can be a fan by just liking the music. But downloading doesn't make you a supportive fan :P
