my personal opinion is that the olympics are there to bring some sense of worldwide unity. to boycott them because we disagree with something going on in China seems wrong. i'm sure there were people that didnt like us when we last held olympic games, but nobody put out the olympic torch over a dislike for the US

i don't know, people are getting pretty pissed at Chinas handling of Tibet. i'll sit back and watch and see what happens

The US is gonna play ping pong with China? This doesn't sound good.

No. This has nothing to do with athletes. I'll be damned if I'm going to attempt to ruin the event that so many international athletes trained their entire lives for. That's selfish and stupid. If America wants to debate on Tibet, they can do it at a summit or at the UN.
Sincerely, Chad.

So if the U.S. boycotts the Olympics.....then worldwide unity will be acheived.

How does that work?

Anyway, I think that if major western countries boycotted the Olympics, China would get REALLY pissed and I would lol towards the Chinese government and all the effort they put into the games.

Basically, they should do it for the lulz (and also to promote Tibet's cause, but mostly for lulz).

Uhm.

I admire the individual athletes who choose to back out due to their personal beliefs, but I think that boycotting for the sake of boycotting is stupid.

The Olympics are actually a strategic way to voice your beliefs, since it's a huge thing for China, and one they've been preparing for for years. It would be a major blow to China's overall morale, considering they think of it as their welcoming party for the world.

On the issue of Tibet, I won't comment, as I don't know **** about it.

Rofl..

But you gotta admit, dissapointed athletes aside, that it would be pretty funny to see China's reaction when if no one turned up. It would be like seeing no one turning up to a kids birthday party, and the kid is standing next to a massive cake while wearing a party hat. A tad sadistic, but still funny.

Personally, I think the Tibet issue has nothing to do with it. It's just an immature thing to do, and the US (along with all other protesting countries) should hold themselves to a higher standard. It's grossly inappropriate and horribly inconsiderate for the athletes that are participating.

That won't happen. There are millions of people who are going to pack that stadium regardless. If the whole of the US that would attend did not, they would be replaced by some other affluent, white Europeans.

It has come to a point where the olympics is nothing more than a political affair.

No.

Have you been to China? My brother (white) moved there permanently and I spent most of my time during last summer there. He's a journalist and has no problem on reporting whatever he wants. He writes about the situation with Tibet (very candidly) all the time on his website, and it's not even blocked in China. You have no idea what you're talking about; just what Fox News fed you.

Edit: sigh. Not the place for this. You're just an idiot.
Sincerely, Chad.

I get really annoyed with people who go constantly hating on China. Boohoo, China kills thousands of people, wah wah they have no rights. Criticize them as much as you will, I'll bet a lot that you have something made in China within 5 meters of you.

China just does things differently. People have all the rights they need. The Chinese government simply wants to keep law and order. Rioting in the streets just isn't their bag, and their laws reflect it. Free speech? They can say whatever they want as long as it doesn't endanger the state. Tienanmen Square massacre and monk protesting? Well then they should quit protesting. It's not like China's killing random people just for the hell of it. Don't start nothing, won't be nothing.

If you want to respond to this fine but stick to the points; ad hominem is an admission of defeat.

That's true. However, human rights and freedom of speech aside, China could handle the protests better, and athletes, though representing their respective countries, have a right to not compete.

there was someone on the news saying that a potential boycott of the olympics would only hurt the feelings of the chinese people, and would in effect make them less prone to listen to the western countries yelling about human rights and freeing Tibet. it would defeat it's purpose so to speak.
#20
I bet if US boycotted the olympics everyone would be like "zomg the us is liek always tryin to be the world police" even if all the other countries already did it.

Haven't we put wars on hold in the past for the olympics? They're supposed to be a time of worldwide unity and peace. Of ALL the things to boycott as a country, this is probably the worst.

Which is why nobody should boycott as a country. It shouldn't be about politics, but about a person's principles. It should remain a personal issue.

Right. I have no problem with athletes deciding not to go, but as a country, it's stupid.

Hm,
I have no problem with atheletes using the olympics to express political views but I think It wouldent make the slightest bit of difference.

Olympics is dull anyway, only interesting thing that happened was those Pro-Tibet peeps trying to wrestle the flame from Konnie Huq then getting pwned by those Chinese super police.

I wouldn't shed a single tear if the Olympics got pulled.

Personally, Sure so there are a few things that could be handled better, but my main worry is the whole thing's gonna become an absolute farce - China's preparations [to the games] have a very 'public relations' feel to it, and I'm sure I'm not the only one with the words 'Berlin 36 repeated' However, sport's one of the few things that politely ignores politics, religions and everything (and just as well), so I'm against any boycott, but I guess things happen.

no.

its just stupid and it wont accomplish anything. China isnt going to free tibet or be nicer to its people just because we boycott the olympics.

its not fair to the athletes who have trained over the past 4 years to be able to compete at this level.

the olympics isnt about politics.
#35
no, it'd be a waste of time. it's only a sporting event and participation shouldn't come down to politics.

Didn't the Soviet Union and US do this during the cold war? Los angeles and Moscow I think?
Nope, no sig here.
#37
NO!

sports and politics have the natural tendency to get all mixed up...
and they have good reason to. But do you seriously think the USA should stop athletes from competing in an event they have trained so hard for? the Olympics is one of those rare events that unites the world, and at times even promotes peace... so why would you want to ruin that?
#39
all boycotting the olympics will do is piss off the chinese.

it was dumb the last time we boycotted and its dumb to do it now
#40
So it´s ok to import cheap stuff from them made by the peolpe who have such low living standards, but it´s not ok to let them have the olympics? The people who are agreeing with boycott are the stupidest people ever and are huge hypocrites(If they buy items made in china).
