I've come to the point in building my guitar where I need to apply a finish to it. (I just stained it today) I'm not sure what to use really.

At first I was thinking a spray on lacquer but i'm worried about it being to thin and not protecting the wood very well.

Then I got to thinking about shelac but i'm not sure on that cause I don't know much about it other than it's made from resin from some kind of bug. And i'd probably brush the first 2-3 coats on and spray the last 1-2.

Btw I thought about just using a polyurethane but have my doubts on how well that'll hold up against scratches and oils from my fingers.

So my question is what's going to protect my guitar the best and give it a really nice looking shine?
Thanks for any help
