Teach him C major and there's millions of songs he can learn.
Indeed.

Technically, to play "Take it Easy" the whole way through, he'd need C major, E minor, and A minor. But G, C, D, is a very popular chord progression, TS. Teach him C major.

I have no opinion on this matter.

As has been stated, G, C and D are very common chords. Many songs can be played with just those chords. Have him learn C Major. Also have him learn E, Em, Am and D7. They are also common chords.

Teach him Em and then he can play Redemption Song

lol G/A/D isn't a I-IV-V smartass.

If you teach him E maj you open up the possiblility of a I-V-V in the key of A. Off the top of my head you can play "No Rain" by Blind Melon with just those 4 chords.
