In English class today we were analysing a newspaper piece and my teacher said that the writer's use of the phrase 'settle down' was a colloquiallism (sp) - I agree with that but she then went on to say that it is an Australianism and said that only Australians use it? I'm certain that its not just Aussies that use this phrase, so please vote to prove me right.
O what a disgrace if such a despised and base race, which worships demons, should conquer a people which has the faith of omnipotent God and is made glorious with the name of Christ!

[quote="'Tommy[fin"]']It's certainly not Am.En, which is all we have to watch out for in exams, cause Europeans get taught Br.En.
I use the phrase a bunch, and I am American.

Find a girl, settle down...

Yup, us Brits use it too.

Your teacher = Phail. You can tell her that, from me. You tell her. Saphrax - a guy who responded to a thread I put on The Pit - said you Phail! Make sure you emphasise the "ph" in phail, just to annoy her further.

Settle down = As described by sphrax above. Or as a phrase used to tell someone to stop being disruptive.

From using IRC for years and especially hanging in several Trivia channels, you often get "Aussie Slang" questions... 95% of which are basically English slang and/or universally used.

Settle down is used globally, so your teacher is wrong.

I was just wondering, why has no one suggested the violent rape and murder of the lame ass teacher and her entire family? Or AIDZ?

Not only do we say it here in England, but I've been to Australia seven times and I don't think it's used as often as it is over here. Plus I wouldn't really consider it to be colloquial either, I'm pretty sure I've heard it in "proper" speech too.

It doesn't. I like jerking off, but I'm sure as hell not gonna do it with my Dad.
