i have a guitar that has a HSH setup. if i put emg 81 and 85 in it and an emg active single coil in the middle will the emg's work? i also have a 5 way switch on my guitar, and i hear they dont work on emg 81 and 85. is that true?

according to the emg site it syas:

"Can I use the stock 5 way switch with my Zakk Wylde Set?

No. Using a 5 way switch with two EMG active pickups results in dead spots in positions 2 and 4. This can result in damage occurring to the speaker cones, especially at high gain levels. You'll have to replace the 5 way switch with a 3 way blade switch instead, like the one shown in our diagrams.

What you COULD do instead is use an 81TW/SA/89. That way, positions 2 and 4 can be used to tap the humbuckers and run with the middle single coil.

They might, actually. See if you can set it up like this:

Position 1 (Bridge): 81
Position 2: SA/81
Position 3 (Mid): SA, or all three, or 81/85
Position 4: SA/85
Position 5 (Neck): 85

it works. in my Ibanez I have:
Bridge = 81
middle = SA
neck = 85

the q&a you posted was for only two humbuckers with no single coil with a 5 way switch.
