Since iPods hold videos now, they need all that storage for porn.

EDIT: So much for the solid-state drive :/

and does not have the 'wear out' mechanism that means flash memory drives can only be used a few thousand times before they wear out.

Wait what?

they can be used to store video, also they can be slightly modded to store other types of data as well. I can see plenty of practical uses for that.

that's for around 100,000 write and erase cycles, so unless you are constantly changing songs at a ridiculous rate then its no real worry

I think it's only flash drives that have no replaceable battery. After a while the internal battery runs out like gameboy games did after a while.

I think.

I guess this also means that music can be stored at a higher bitrate, thus 500,000 songs could be a more realistic 20,000 songs at a much better sound quality.

As a hiphop and electronic musician who samples all sorts of music, from all sorts of places, I like to have a huge amount of music to draw from. I also DJ, and a good DJ has a huge variety of tunes to play out anywhere, to match any mood, and to make my sets somewhat of an interesting "journey" for the listener. Furthermore, like to have my entire iTunes library on my iPod, just because that keeps things simple for me. I would absolutely love to have this kind of space.

i need to know how many gigs it is or else i don't care. i hate it when they say "500,000 songs or 3,500 videos" that doesnt tell me anything because i may be a person who only listens to 20 minute jazz odysseys or may be thirty second punk power chord progressions.

this is an instance that the technology would be useful in. but i don't think that the average music listener, you know the kind that encodes their 500 mp3s at 128 or lower, would have any use for this much storage.

i could also see the record industry opposing the release of this technology because having access to so much storage space would encourage piracy.

I wouldn't worry. If you can tell the difference between an MP3 at 195 kpbs and one at 320 kpbs, then you are not human. Try a blind test so that your decision isn't affected by predispositions.

I think they're going by average 3-5 minute songs (at 192 kpbs).

I wasn't thinking about 320. I was thinking a lot higher, somewhere around lossless, maybe?

Still cant really tell the difference after 192. Anyone who says they can is BSing.

which would enable a device such as an MP3 player to store about half a million songs - or 3,500 films - and cost far less to produce.

And yet, the profit margin will most likely be inflated like a mother ****er.

edit:
Actually, maybe now it's a good idea to invest...
Assuming this technology sees the light of day within the near future (couple years at most, hopefully).

I can if I'm using good headphones or studio monitors, I can't if I'm using those crappy little iPod earbuds though, theres definitely a difference in how the treble sounds, it's not that major though.

Aww it's for people who show off. They have half a milion songs ("omfg I have lot of songs on my iPod, I'm so cool") but they would never hear even half of them. Let me see... If one song tooks average 3,5 minutes then 500000 songs takes 1750000 minutes= 29166 hours~ 1215 days :>

"At present the most capacious iPod - the 160GB iPod Classic - can store 40,000 songs."

iPods are weird then, coz some 160gb mp3's can hold 95000 songs and they're using the same average example of a song.

500 000 songs

4mb a song (for these estimates i think thats the number)

2 million mb

1 000 gb

1 gb=roughly 10 hours of decent quality porn

1 000x10

10 000 hours of porn on one device

I think it's cool. I mean, sure, I'm probably never going to fill it up (like I have with my 30GB iPod), but I can be assured that, if well kept, I would never need another MP3 player ever again.

I mean, the video storage would be insane, as well, and, in the long run, if the battery started wearing down with age, I could get a new one.

So, a little much? Sure. But it's worth it, IMO.
