Actives are powered by batteries and normally have pre-amps, they are mostly used for metal for their compressed tone i.e. EMG's
Passives are not powered but tend to have a more natural and open tone

The main difference is that actives are battery-powered where passives are not. Actives are designed to provide a tone that is more heavily dependant on the pickups rather than the guitar itself, as they use preamp with an EQ and stuff and also to try and eliminate hum and feedback, aslo providing a more consistent tone.

actives tend to drive the front end of the amp more as well, so you can usually get more bite.

Exactly - a cheap 200 dollar guitar with EMGs will sound virtually the same as a 2000 dollar guitar with the same EMGs.

Problem is that EMGs suck....

So buy Seymour Duncan active pickups
